Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs: Why we need it

Pennsylvania Commission on LGBTQ Affairs: Why we need it
Gov. Tom Wolf is to be commended for creating the nation's first statewide Commission on LGBTQ Affairs on August 6. Why is such a commission needed? LGBTQ communities around the state are often unaware of what is going on in the various other regions in Pennsylvania. Being aware of what is going on elsewhere may help regions formulate their own strategies, or tap into resources that they might not have been aware of.

What a busy past few months! It was fun walking with the Edinboro students and NW PA Pride in the Homecoming Parade. Two weeks later, I went down to march with Crawford Area LGBT+ and several Allegheny Colege students in the Meadville Halloween Parade. Randy, the organizer for our unit, had said that it was going to be wet and suggested that folks wear a poncho or something. I must admit that I tend to not be very good at costuming, but I picked up both a red ponco and a red clown nose, and told folks that I was Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Raingear. Speaking of costumes, there were some terrific costumes at the Identity/EUP HalloQueen Ball, and also some wonderful performers at the Penn State Behrend Drag Show.

Erie Gay News new ad rates

Erie Gay News new ad rates
First and foremost, we want to thank everyone who has ever advertised with Erie Gay News! The support of our advertisers has been what has enabled us to keep our region's community informed about LGBT news and events for almost 25 years now and we are deeply grateful for being a part of making that possible. We are glad to inform our community about the great news and events of our community. We are one of only three community LGBT print publications in Pennsylvania, the other two being Philadelphia Gay News and Central Voice PA from the Harrisburg area. Cleveland and Pittsburgh no longer have LGBT print publications, so Erie Gay News takes a lot of pride in informing our region. Erie Gay News has had the same rates for ads since December of 2002, and rising printing and postage costs necessitate that we need to update our rate to reflect those realities.

23rd Annual Erie Pride Picnic recap

23rd Annual Erie Pride Picnic recap

NW PA Pride Alliance held the 23rd Annual Erie Pride Picnic on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at the Rotary Pavilion at Presque Isle State Park. About 230 people total attended and enjoyed a day in the sun with great food and friends old and new.
There was a tragic auto accident at about 8 AM that morning near Beach 5. The 17 year old passenger was killed and the 21 year old driver was seriously injured. Access to the park was restricted/unavailable for several hours and the start of the picnic had to be delayed until 3 PM.
Staff and volunteers worked very hard to make this a great event for all in probably the most challenging set of circumstances that a local Pride event has faced yet. People who made the Pride Picnic happen include Season Crannell, Chris Dye, Daniel Thomas, Alex Sphon, Kelly Kidd, Melanie Shubitowski, Julie, Collis Allen, Kim and Andrea, Jodi, Gary Snyder, Jeremy Snyder, Jeff Hill, Audrey, Johauna, the group of women who helped free the U-Haul when it got stuck in sand, Matthew Robison, and Deb Spilko.

Remembering Ben Heggy

Remembering Ben Heggy
Those of you who saw Erie's Perry 200 Parade or have been to the Millcreek 4th of July parade or the NWPA Pride Alliance's annual Pride Parade the last few years have probably noticed that we had a pretty good sized float rolling down the street behind a big, grey truck. What you may not know is that we had that float because NWPA Pride put out a call for trucks or trailers or pretty much anything that could be decorated and trotted out. The universe answered that call with a message from a man from Seven Springs, PA named Ben Heggy.

Erie Pride 2005 March & Rally
On Saturday, October 15, 2005, the Gay Male/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender and Allied communities of Erie County came together to celebrate the successes of the past year and the challenges of the upcoming year. Fall pride events have been held most years since 1998, and picnics have been held since 1992. The organizer this year was Dan Burdick, a faculty member in the music department at Edinboro University. The March included 60-75 people representing such diverse groups as PFLAG, Allegheny College, Penn State - Behrend, Edinboro University, the Erie County Health Department, and many others. Erie City Police led the March down State Street from the Zone to Perry Square. The crowd at Perry Square for the rally was estimated at 125 people. The Rally opened with moving comments by event co-sponsor and organizer, Patty Puline of the Erie County Department of Health about Jeff Grego, LGBT community leader who was recently killed in a plane crash. The keynote was given by Lee Edmondson - co-owner of Trance. Lee focused on speaking about positive changes that have happened in Erie in the last 40 years and gave specific examples of how to move forward. Other speakers included event organizer Michael Mahler - co-organizer of the rally and co-editor of the Erie Gay News, Zach - the first openly gay Homecoming candidate at Edinboro University, Kate Ebersole, CPCC, LCSW, of Authentic Lives Coaching, and Mark - the President of PFLAG. Two other featured speakers were Joy Greco - Republican member of the Erie County Council who is also running for Millcreek Supervisor. She spoke about how the County Council has supported the civil rights of all the citizens in the county. She has been instrumental in the changes enacted by the County Council. Brava to Joy! Another featured speaker was Joe Giles(D), Chair of the Erie County Council. He spoke about how the County Council has put into place budgetary and administrative details to make the Human Rights Commission possible. Again, great work by Joe and the Council! This will also make the ECHRC more independent. In 2003, although there was funding for the agency in the county's budget, County Executive Rick Schenker eliminated all staff, except for a secretary, who forwarded all complaints to the State Human Relations Commission. The State HRC doesn't cover sexual orientation and gender identity, so a case involving an area gay person couldn't be investigated.

GLBT Float in 1995 Erie Bicentennial Parade

GLBT Float in 1995 Erie Bicentennial Parade
It's January (1995) and I'm reading an article in the Erie Times about this huge parade the bicentennial commission is creating. Heidi Streich and Larry Sawdy think the community should build a float. The idea has some merit, but I surely do not want to be on any float committee-work with the League keeps me busy enough. I try to kill the idea by mentioning the possibility of violence and I use an old standby-we can't find someone to work with the media when the news breaks. After discussing the idea, Heidi eventually convinces me. I reluctantly agree to call the commission for guidelines and to get a sense of their position.

1994 Pride Picnic
The Bridges Picnic on June 11th was a very pleasant, low-key affair. We did have some folks come all the way from Bradford. Folks had a good time. We had a volleyball game that had to be seen to be believed. It might have appeared to have been a mass tryout for the Athletically-Challenged Olympics. Most important was that we all had great fun, sort of what I heard about the Gay Games-the point is to enjoy the activity and the friendship, and not necessarily to be the Jock from Hell.
