Breast Cancer Awareness Weekend raises $5239

The 11th Annual Breast Cancer Weekend was held Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Zone Dance Club, 133 W 18th St, Erie PA The event was organized by Michelle Michaels. The beneficiary was again local charity StringsforaCURE. The event directly raised $2,739, and Sam's Club additionally donated a grant of $2,500, making for a total of $5,239.

On Saturday, October 8, members of NW PA Pride Alliance and Identity, Edinboro University's LGBTQIA student group, marched in the Edinboro Homecoming Parade. The theme this year as Level Up - Classic Video Games. Season Crannell made themed decorations for the contingent to carry. The parade went through the campus of the university and the streets of Edinboro and was well-received.

Buffalo United Artists and Brazen-Faced Varlets will present A Midsummer Dyke's Dream written by Shawn P. Northrip, direction by Lara D. Haberberger on November 18 - December 10, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm at Alleyway Theatre Main Street Cabaret Theatre, 1 Curtain Up Alley, Buffalo, NY 14202. Four actors will portray over 16 characters in this comedic retelling of the Bard's classic tale of lovers, fairies, and a donkey. This is part of the 400 year celebration of Shakespeare's death along with the tenth anniversary of the Brazen-Faced Varlets. Shawn Northrip wrote the Varlets' inaugural show, Ramona and Juliet. Alarming Rise in Death by Suicide Among 10 - 14 Year Old Youth
Data released in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Report shows that the rate of death by suicide among adolescents, 10 – 14 years old, has been on the rise and is now higher than that of death by motor vehicles. In 2009 approximately 1 youth per 100,000 died by suicide, compared to 2014 when approximately 2 youth per 100,000 took their own lives.
NCAVP mourns the intimate partner violence homicide of Ava Tucker in Henrico County, VA
November 1, 2016 - The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) has learned of the intimate partner violence homicide of Ava Tucker, age 26, in Henrico County, Virginia which occurred on October 27th, 2016. According to local media reports, Ava's ex-girlfriend, Sheena Yolanda Wilson, age 33, confessed to her homicide and turned herself in to police. Ava's sister, Latesha Tucker, has spoken out, calling Ava a "beautiful person" and a "beautiful soul."

October 13, 2016 - The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) has learned of the homicide of Brandi "Chill" Bledsoe, age 32, a Black transgender woman, killed in Cleveland, Ohio on October 8, 2016. According to media reports, Brandi Blesoe was found dead in a driveway in what is suspected to be a homicide. Initial media reports and the medical examiner misgendered Bledsoe, and her family, friends and activists online called out local media for their error and brought attention to her tragic death. Bledsoe's cousin, John Cragget, spoke with the press about his cousin, saying of Bledsoe, "She was really beautiful. She was really sweet and nice."

October 7, 2016 - The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) has learned of the homicide of Jazz Alford, age 30, a Black transgender woman, killed in Birmingham, Alabama on September 23rd, 2016. According to media reports, Jazz Alton was found shot to death at the Kings Inn. Jazz Alton's sister, Toya Milan, corrected her misgendering in the local press and spoke out saying "She was such a loving person, and we didn't know anybody that would want to hurt her. It's been a hard pill to swallow."

Governor Signs Bill to Protect LGBT Students Against Discrimination at Private Universitie
Sacramento - September 20, 2016 –California Governor Jerry Brown today signed Senate Bill (SB) 1146, authored by Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) and sponsored by Equality California. The bill requires private universities receiving public funds to publicly disclose if they discriminate against students with respect to gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation. Senate Bill 1146 requires universities that are granted a Title IX exemption to notify the California Student Aid Commission and disseminate the information to students and staff.

Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force Announces Opening of Medical Clinic Following Extensive Renovation of East Liberty Facility
Pittsburgh, PA - October 26, 2016 - Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF), southwest Pennsylvania's oldest and largest HIV/AIDS service organization, is pleased to announce the opening of a medical clinic, following the completion of a $1 million renovation of its East Liberty facility. Combined with PATF's existing vital social services, the clinic ushers in PATF's new model of comprehensive, coordinated and integrated care for HIV/AIDS clients. Los Angeles, October 19, 2016 – Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students seeking financial assistance for their undergraduate or graduate school education are encouraged to apply for a Point Foundation Scholarship. Students enrolling in undergraduate or graduate programs for the 2017-2018 academic year are eligible to apply for Point's multiyear scholarship.
