4th Annual Afternoon for Equality

On Sunday, July 27, 2014, the Greater Erie Alliance for Equality held its 4th Annual Afternoon for Equality at 21 la rue dix, 21 W 10th St, Erie PA. This is the major fundraising event for the group. About 70 people attended. Major donors ($1,000+) included Erie Insurance, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the McCain Foundation. In addition to the major donor gifts, approximately $9,000 more was donated through sponsorships and individual ticket sales for the fundraiser itself. Plans announced for the remainder of 2014 include a national speaker for the fall (November 30), Cleve Jones, who is the founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and was an associate of Harvey Milk before his assassination. GEAE also announced that they will be hosting a health workshop this fall with Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield; they will also provide a national LGBT youth specialist for an Erie Public School District teacher/administrator in-service (November 4); continue their monthly third Wednesday service project at Calamari's; and pending final fundraising for the year, make a $10,000 LGBT educational gift back to the larger Erie community. Erie Transgender Community Included in Trans Across America Documentary

Erie Sisters President, Melanie Shubitowski, and Erie Sisters member, Chelsea Jones, were recently honored to be selected for an upcoming documentary entitled "Trans Across America".  Trans Family of Erie founder, Caitlyn Strohmeyer, and Melanie's fiancé, Julie Flagella, were also appearing in this segment of the upcoming film which was filmed at Melanie's home in Conneaut, Ohio. The documentary is headed by Chloe Prince, founder of the PinkEssence Transgender network, and her friend, April Wilks, and is to include multiple stops across America showing selected transgenders throughout the country. The film is being produced by Hollywood producer, T. Smith III, and should be out for viewing in film festivals around the country in late Summer or early Fall. At each filming location along the journey, Chloe and April are doing a bigger, better trade up with participants, where the participants are trading an item acquired for something bigger, better and of more value. At the end of the tour, Chloe and April will donate the final item collected to charity. Look for "Trans Across America" later this year in your area.
