Greater Erie Alliance for Equality (GEAE) Wins Charity Challenge

Greater Erie Alliance for Equality (GEAE) would like to thank everyone who came out on August 14, 2018 and supported our Charity Challenge with Room 33, 1033 State St, Erie PA last month. A ridiculous number of people showed up, sang, and bought raffle and 50/50 tickets, winning glorious entertainment packages and treats from local businesses. Talented and energetic celebrity bartenders, including Mayor Schember, rounded out the evening. On the evening of Erie Gives where the support continued online, it is not hard to see how much the Erie community loves to work together for a greater cause and enjoy a fun evening. We especially would like to send a special thank you to Room 33 for hosting this ongoing event, to all our sponsors, and, of course, to all our guests and fellow charity challengers.

'Conversion Therapy' Ban to be considered by Mayor's LGBTQ Advisory Council after 7-0 vote by Erie City Council
On September 19, 2018, Erie City Council passed a resolution introduced by Councilmember Kathy Schaaf to have the Mayor's LGBTQ Advisory Council research and report back on potential city ordinance to ban conversion therapy. The Mayor's LGBTQ Advisory Council is expected to meet in October, and the City of Erie Solicitor has already seen a draft of the potential ordinance. If the solicitor and the advisory council approve a review, the ordinance would still need to be voted on by Erie City Council and signed by the Mayor.

At the request of Erie County Democratic Party Chair Jim Wertz, the Erie Dems have formed an LGBT Caucus. The purpose of the caucus is to represent the interests of the LGBT community in the local party and to also engage with the local LGBT community. (There are also causcuses in the local party for veterans, women, progressives, black voters, younger voters, etc.)

Lake Erie Gala Nov 14-18

Erie Sisters & Brothers Transgender Support Group will host their Annual Lake Erie Gala Nov. 14-18 at Bel-Aire Hotel and Conference Center, 2800 W 8th St, Erie, PA. This is a four day transgender event starts Wednesday with dinner, bus tours of attractions in the area, dinner, dancing, entertainment and farewell breakfast on Sunday morning. This is a social affair so there is a lot of chatting with other transgender people, a chance to relax, meet new friends and do a little dancing.

The only things I knew about Kansas City prior to visiting, were the tales of legendary BBQ and the Chiefs. I went with an open mind and little expectations. The city has been generating a lot of positive buzz as of late, so I thought I'd see what all the talk was about. I found the city to be on the cusp of a breakthrough so to speak. A sleeping dragon ready for its day in the sun. The next "It City" - Nashville being the current "It City" and where I reside.

President Obama Endorses 17 LGBTQ Victory Fund-Endorsed Candidates in Latest Announcement

Washington, DC - October 1, 2018 – Today former President Barack Obama announced his endorsement of 17 openly LGBTQ candidates for governor, U.S. Congress and state offices – including Christine Hallquist for governor of Vermont and Sharice Davids for a U.S. House seat from Kansas. President Obama previously endorsed five openly LGBTQ candidates in his first round of endorsements, for a total of 22 openly LGBTQ candidates nationwide. Court Says N.C. Law Does Not Bar Transgender People from Public Facilities

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- October 1, 2018 – A federal court last night said that House Bill 142, the 2017 law that replaced North Carolina's notorious anti-LGBT measure, House Bill 2, does not bar transgender people from using public restrooms and other facilities that match their gender identity. U.S. District Judge Thomas Schroeder also said that he would allow a challenge to the law's ban on local LGBT nondiscrimination policies to go forward.

Cuyahoga County, Ohio passes nondiscrimination ordinance covering over 1 million people

CLEVELAND - Septmeber25, 2018 ––Cuyahoga County Council just made history for its LGBTQ residents. The council––the first county in Ohio, and only one of two that can enact such a law, the other being Summit––voted to establish county-wide LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination protections. In addition, they created a Human Rights Commission in order to advance a culture of diversity and inclusion, and to respond to complaints of discrimination.

Florida School District Settles Lawsuit, Will Allow Transgender Student to Use Restrooms and Locker Rooms in Accordance with Gender Identity

SAN FRANCISCO - September 18, 2018 -The federal district court for the Middle District of Florida has approved a settlement agreement in a lawsuit the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) brought on behalf of John Doe against the Volusia County School Board (VCSB) for excluding John from the shared boys' restrooms and locker rooms because he is transgender. The suit alleged that the school's policies violated federal sex discrimination laws and the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The settlement ensures that John can use the boys' bathrooms and locker rooms at schools in Volusia County.

There's A New Proposed Crimes Against Humanity Treaty: But Where Are Women's and LGBTI Rights?

New York–A new international treaty is in the works, focusing on crimes against humanity such as massacres, torture, and rape. However, the draft treaty adopts an opaque definition of gender, that would give some governments an excuse to ignore persecution of women and LGBTIQ people. Most civil society groups are unaware of the treaty and have not weighed in. Today, activists are launching a campaign calling on the international community to affirm our understanding of discrimination, including when based on sexual orientation, gender identity or sex characteristics.

(Oakland, CA - September 12, 2018) -- Today we learned that Londonn Moore Kinard, a 20-year-old Black trans woman, was murdered earlier this week in North Port, Florida. We mourn Londonn's murder as we continue to mourn and process the recent deaths of Dejanay Stanton in Illinois, Vontashia Bell in Louisiana, and Shantee Tucker in Pennsylvania – all young Black trans women murdered in just the last two weeks. Londonn is the twentieth transgender person murdered this year in the U.S. that we know of, and the fourteenth Black trans woman.

Using Sex as a Boyfriend Screening Tool

I have a dilemma.  I am looking for a boyfriend, but not too seriously.  I am enjoying great sex a lot of the time and meet most of these guys on-line.  I think that having sex with a guy is a good way to "screen him" to see if he is potential boyfriend material.  If our chemistry is good in bed, then that tells me to go ahead and get to know him better.  If we're not good in bed together, why consider him as boyfriend material?  My friends disagree and say I've got it backwards.  What do you think?

Gov. Tom Wolf is to be commended for creating the nation's first statewide Commission on LGBTQ Affairs on August 6. Why is such a commission needed? LGBTQ communities around the state are often unaware of what is going on in the various other regions in Pennsylvania. Being aware of what is going on elsewhere may help regions formulate their own strategies, or tap into resources that they might not have been aware of.

Willyce Kim Wrote Her Own Story

Willyce Kim is the first Asian-American lesbian writer to be published in the U.S. She spent her childhood years in Hawaii and California, and graduated from San Francisco College for Women in 1968. Kim was influenced by musicians such as Bob Dylan and Joan Baez and writers including Adrienne Rich and Diane Di Prima. She self-published her first poetry chapbook, Curtains of Light, with her sister in 1970 and soon after she began working with the Women's Press Collective in Oakland. As a member of the collective, she published works, took photographs and traveled the country to distribute literature and give readings at colleges, bookstores and women's bars. In the '70s and '80s, she published three poetry collections, two novels, and contributed to literary magazines including The Furies, Phoenix Rising, and Conditions.

Inaugural LGBTQ Aging Summit Registration Open Until Friday, October 5
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Aging announced today that registration for the commonwealth's Inaugural LGBTQ Aging Summit is open until October 5 and the agenda is now available. The summit will be held on October 9-10 in Harrisburg, PA, and is occurring as a result of grassroots efforts made by numerous LGBTQ and senior advocacy groups. There are currently more than 220 participants registered for the summit.
