In addition to the regular award, an additional scholarship was added, named the Tanner-Cipolla Award for an LGBTQ student focusing their studies in social services, education, art, music, or social studies. Pride Journey: Philadelphia
The first time I visited Philadelphia was for last year's NLGJA conference and to be perfectly honest, I really didn't think much of the city. The main reason for my feeling was mostly because I was stuck in a hotel conference room most of my stay. Apart from brief visits to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and The 'Rocky Stairs', aka, the Philadelphia Art Museum, I really didn't have the opportunity to explore the city.

National LGBTQ Task Force condemns the shameful decision by SCOTUS to uphold Trump's latest Muslim ban
WASHINGTON-DC: On June 26, the Supreme Court of the United States of America (SCOTUS) ruled in favor of Donald Trump's ban on immigrants from seven countries, almost all of which are predominantly Muslim, in Trump v. Hawaii. The National LGBTQ Task Force condemns the decision as an outright attack on freedom and liberty for Muslims. In addition, it jeopardizes the lives of LGBTQ people who may be fleeing hostile governments.
NCLR and GLAD Filing Argues the Court Should Permanently Stop the Trump-Pence Ban Now
WASHINGTON, D.C. - June 23, 2018 -The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) today filed their reply in support of their Cross-Motion for Summary Judgment in Doe v. Trump-the first lawsuit filed to stop the Trump-Pence transgender military ban. If Judge Kollar-Kotelly rules in favor of the plaintiffs, that decision would permanently block the Trump-Pence transgender military ban from ever taking effect. Today's filing rebuts the administration's attempt to "blinker reality and recast the Mattis Plan as something other than what it plainly is: a blueprint to ensure that no transgender individuals serve in our Nation's Armed Forces 'in any capacity.'" The plaintiffs' reply is the last in a series of filings that must occur before Judge Kollar-Kotelly determines whether she can issue a permanent ruling blocking the ban.
OutRight Reacts to the United States Withdrawal from the UN Human Rights Council
June 19, 2018 - Today, at a press conference held at the State Department, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (UN) Nikki Haley announced the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The withdrawal marks the latest announcement in a concerning trend of US divestment from United Nations institutions and multilateral agreements including the 2017 defunding of the UN Population Fund and the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation.
When LGBT Elders Have No Place to Call Home
[New York, NY] In more than half the country, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans still live in fear of being fired from a job, turned away from a business, or being denied a place to live – all because of who they are. A New ad depicts man turned away from nursing home because he is gay.
In First-of-its-kind Ruling, Federal Judge Sides with Transgender Woman Incarcerated in Men's Prison
June 15, 2018 - Yesterday, the federal court for the District of Massachusetts ruled in favor of a transgender woman wrongly incarcerated in a men's prison, allowing her claim challenging mistreatment by the Department of Corrections (DOC) under the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) to move forward. In the first-of-its-kind ruling, the court found that interpreting the ADA to exclude transgender people would be unconstitutional.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - June 11, 2018 -U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions imposed stringent new limitations on asylum claims brought by those fleeing domestic or gang violence. Health
Bisexual, Pansexual, Queer, Non-binary or Something else?
I recently met a new client, a man who identified as bisexual. He asked me, at our first session, "Do you believe in bisexuality?" I admit I was a bit stunned by the question. "Of course, I do", I replied. He said, "My previous therapist told me that bisexuality doesn't exist." I kept my mouth from dropping wide open, but, inside, it did the drop. "How can this be?" I thought to myself, "How could anyone be so ignorant?"

Talk is not cheap
From Philadelphia Gay News: Ah, summertime - the living is easy. We toss our cares to the wind, head for a little R&R and, for many, that great summer vacation. So it should be a time to relax, lay back and enjoy the sunshine. But wait, we're five months from an election. Here's where I can envision you saying, "Mark, why are you bringing this up now?"
Amazon Trail: Remember Summer?
I mean serious summer. When the season was all fireflies and sandcastles, ice cream trucks and taking the train to visit relatives for two whole weeks. It was hours of reading, amusement parks, and hitting tennis balls against the apartment building next door for hours. It was the public swimming pool and cool sheets for sunburns and the ice cream truck. It was freedom.
