Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the country's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, and provides training for aging providers and LGBT organizations, largely through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging. With offices in New York City, Washington, DC and Chicago, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 30 local SAGE affiliates in 20 states and the District of Columbia.

SAGE, UNLV School of Public Health Invites All LGBTQ+ Older Americans to Participate in Groundbreaking State of Aging Survey
SAGE, the world's oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ elders, has partnered with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Public Health to create a public, inaugural State of LGBTQ+ Aging survey with the goal of better understanding and highlighting the experiences, needs, and resiliencies of LGBTQ+ older people across the country. Survey questions will include a variety of topics, including healthcare, companionship, instances of violence against the LGBTQ+ community, and care plans for growing older. A type of survey of this magnitude and audience has not been done before.

In Face of Anti-LGBTQ+ Extremism, 200 Senior Living Communities Commit to LGBTQ+ Inclusion, Participating in Inaugural Long Term Care Equality Index (LEI)
WASHINGTON - May 24, 2023 - Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization, and SAGE, the world's largest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ+ elders, released the 2023 Long Term Care Equality Index (LEI). This year, 200 long-term care communities across 34 states participated in the LEI, with 75 percent of participating communities earning either the High Performer or Leader designation. Recent news about a senior living facility in Boston vandalized with hate speech, as well as a story of a 79-year-old transgender woman who was discriminated against by a nursing home in Maine, highlight the need to support LGBTQ+ elders.

WASHINGTON - June 29, 2021 -- Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation, the educational arm of the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, and SAGE, the world's largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ older adults, released the first edition of the Long-Term Care Equality Index (LEI). This national benchmarking tool evaluates long-term care communities based on the equity and inclusion of their LGBTQ residents and patients. This initial report does not score long-term care communities, but instead includes research data on how many long-term care communities currently have LGBTQ-inclusive policies, and lays out how organizations can participate in the LEI and improve their policies.

SAGE Needs Volunteers to Zoom with Sen Toomey to pass the National Equality Act
National SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders) has identified a group of US Senators as potential supporters of the National Equality Act which provides protection for the LGBTQ community against discrimination in employment, housing and public accommodation. PA's own Pat Toomey is one of the senators selected. SAGE has asked for small groups (15 or less) to meet with Sen. Toomey and/or staff in May via Zoom to share stories about discrimination experienced by themselves, a friend or a loved one. SAGE will provide a brief on-line training session to prepare for the 30 minute virtual meeting with Toomey's staff. Anyone living in PA can participate and if you or someone you know would be an effective voice for equality by participating please contact Jeff Miller (park510200@verizon.net). The date for the training and meeting will be set for a time that all participants are available.

Trump Administration Proposes Eliminating LGBT Elders from Key Federal Survey
[NEW YORK, NY - March 20, 2017] Services & Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) announced today that it is launching a nationwide effort to oppose the Trump Administration's proposed erasure of LGBT elders from the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP). Specifically, SAGE opposes changes that would eliminate questions that allow the federal government to assess the extent to which LGBT older adults are receiving federally funded elder services. According to a March 13 notice in the Federal Register, those questions (which have been included in the Survey since 2014) are proposed for elimination in the 2017 Survey. This is the only change the Trump Administration proposes to the Survey.

[New York, NY] On November 1, as part of its work to improve the lives of LGBT older people, Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) launched the country's first hotline dedicated to LGBT elders. The SAGE LGBT Elder Hotline is operated by the GLBT National Help Center and staffed entirely by LGBT volunteers.
