THE DADDIES

By Kimberly Dark

A LOVE LETTER TO MASCULINITY

2019: The Year of the Daddy

"The so-called "dad style" that has been adopted by all genders in recent years, it seems we've reached peak "daddy."-NY Times

"No one anywhere writes all the way through eros, power exchange, and sexuality more fiercely than Kimberly Dark. In The Daddies, Kimberly risks what most writers will not, opening up and asking how masculinity has woven through every realm of our existence, how it has seduced us, betrayed us, protected us, violated us, how it lives in men and women and every other gender and sexuality, how we are facing a reckoning. Kimberly Dark asks us to embrace and reimagine masculinity from the inside out and hold the embrace long enough to change the world."- Lidia Yuknavitch, author of Small Backs of Children and Chronology of Water?

At the end of 2018 both the New York Times and Saturday Night Live signaled that the word, used affectionately by children, and lustfully by gay men, lesbians and straight women, had achieved a specific significance in the cultural mainstream.  Brill Publishing's Social Fiction Series is happy to announce the publication of The Daddies by Kimberly Dark. Dark's work has been enjoyed by audiences in performance and print for more than twenty years.

"I study gender and sexuality and how power exists and is recreated in intimate interactions and then patterned back out into social structures. Including Daddy. ---Kimberly Dark

The Daddies is a story about love and grief – how it hurts to change, even when change is needed.  Using hybrid narrative, magical realism and pop-culture analysis, The Daddies offers a dark love letter to masculinity told as a queer leather-Daddy love story – among women.  The story itself is about a break up between adults, lovers, but the metanarrative is about our cultural need to break up with patriarchy, while still holding onto love for masculinity. The Daddies is about the pain of change, an unflinching tour through the pleasures and horrors of domination.

Kimberly Dark is a writer, professor and raconteur, working to reveal the hidden architecture of everyday life one clever essay, poem, and story at a time. She uses humor, surprise and intimacy to help audiences discover their influences, and reclaim their power as social creators. Kimberly teaches in Sociology and Women's Studies at CSU, San Marcos. She also teaches writing and theatre courses for Cal State Summer Arts.
