Behrend community responds to hate speech

Eric W. Corty, Ph.D wrote a "Guest Voice" column for the Erie Times-News, "How Behrend responded to hate speech" (December 11, 2015).) You can read the article here.

Dr. Corty-a professor at Penn State Behrend-explained with much admiration the manner in which the Behrend community responded when a homophobic message was placed next to his friend's office door on November 10. A custodial staffperson informed his supervisor, and the campus police were called. An officer explained the situation to the friend ("with much care," wrote Corty) and an investigation had begun. The interim chancellor asked all faculty and staff to work toward maintaining an inclusive community.

Corty organized an effort to wear rainbow ribbons and buttons in solidarity with the targeted person and in support of inclusiveness.
