4 Ways Caitlyn Jenner is Changing the World

By Dr. Sherrie Campbell

1. Courage: Caitlyn took time to really embrace her transition. She is doing it at an unusual time and age in life which shows us that it is never too late to do things which you dream of doing. She is helping the tragically confused transgender children see that they have time for their confusion, in that these big decisions have a lifetime to be made in terms of transitioning. Caitlyn is showing she is no longer embarrassed or ashamed.

2. Challenging stereotypes: Caitlyn identifies herself as heterosexual in that her tastes or attractions to women have not changed from when she was Bruce. Sometimes sex isn't about gender as much as it is just what someone is attracted too.

3. Interests can be sexless: There is a public person who was an incredibly famous man for his masculine traits as an athlete who was really a woman on the inside. Caitlyn is showing other transgender kids that androgyny is a beautiful thing. Caitlyn still loves Harleys and all the other masculine things Bruce loved and none of that has to change for him to feel like a woman inside. Interests, as shown by Caitlyn, have nothing do with gender.

4. Role Model: The transgender community of confused kids and parents have a role model to look to who is a nice person, who is bringing this topic to light and the challenging conversations are being had. Caitlyn is opening all the doors for acceptance, rejection and conversation.
