103rd Annual Erie Art Museum Spring Show Opening April 2nd
Erie, PA - Artists are gathering to showcase the region's talents in the 103rd Annual Erie Art Museum Spring Show. The Spring Show is a juried art exhibition open to any and all artists living, working, or studying within 250 miles of the City of Erie, Pennsylvania. 74 works of art were chosen from 533 submissions. The opening will be Thursday, April 2nd, at 6 pm, coinciding with the monthly Art After Dark concert series.
The Erie Art Museum, in partnership with the PennWest University Art Department's Visiting Artist & Speaker Endowment committee (VASE), selected Jenny Kendler as the Spring Show juror. Kendler is an interdisciplinary artist, activist, and naturalist based in Chicago and various forests. Over the past two decades, her projects on climate change and biodiversity loss have been shown at London's Hayward Gallery, New York's Governors Island, Storm King, the Smithsonian NMNH, MCA Chicago, and public locations from urban riverwalks to remote deserts and tropical forests. Kendler is to speak at the William P. Alexander Music Center on the PennWest - Edinboro campus (110 Kiltie Road, Edinboro, PA 16444) on Thursday, March 26th at 6 pm.
Kendler curated the show to evoke a sense of emergence, "An interplay of difference and cohesion, where distinct voices meet, collide, and reveal something unexpected. Put simply, the whole becomesgreater than the sum of its parts."
The Spring Show originated as the Art Club of Erie's "May Show." The inaugural exhibition was held in 1923. For the first fifty years, submissions were limited to artists within a 75 mile radius. The modern Spring Show has expanded to include artists within a 250 mile radius and partners with Edinboro University (now part of PennWest) to include art talks, workshops, and critiques.
