Ohio's Only LGBTOIA+ Homeless Shelter

Youngstown, OH - Full Spectrum Community Outreach has been informed by Dara of TransOhio that its planned emergency shelter will be the only LGBTQIA+ homeless shelter in the entire state of Ohio. While the organization initially believed this distinction applied regionally, this confirmation underscores a much broader and more urgent statewide need. This milestone positions Full Spectrum Community Outreach as a critical lifeline for LGBTQIA+ individuals across Ohio who face disproportionate rates of housing instability, discrimination, and violence, particularly transgender and gender nonconforming people.

"Learning that this will be the only LGBTQIA+ homeless shelter in Ohio is both an honor and a huge responsibility," said Katie, Operations Manager at Full Spectrum Community Outreach. "It highlights not only the importance of this project, but also how few affirming housing options exist for our community statewide."

The shelter will provide safe, affirming, and trauma-informed housing, ensuring that individuals are supported in an environment where their identities are respected and celebrated. For many, this shelter will represent the first place they have ever felt truly safe while unhoused.

A Call to Donors and Community Supporters

While this distinction is significant, it also reveals a sobering reality: one shelter cannot meet the needs of an entire state alone. Donor support is essential to ensure sustainability, staffing, wraparound services, and the ability to serve individuals who may travel long distances to access affirming care. "Donor investment isn't just supporting a building; it's supporting safety, dignity, and survival," the organization shared. "Every contribution helps ensure that LGBTQIA+ Ohioans are not forced to choose between homelessness and discrimination."
