Erie Dems Issue Statement of Support for Councilmember Faulkner’s Sanctuary City Resolution

Erie, PA - Erie County Democrats are proud to support the sanctuary city resolution introduced by Erie City Councilperson Susannah Faulkner. This resolution sends a resounding message across the Commonwealth, and the nation, that all are welcome in the City of Erie. In order to uphold the vision our Mayor and Council have for Erie, we ask that each councilperson vote in favor of this resolution on Wednesday, July 19.

In 2023, over 530 anti-LGBTQIA bills were introduced in state legislatures across the United States and in the U.S. Congress. Of the proposed legislations, 68 were signed into law, while another 340 bills remain in consideration, and more are being drafted and introduced every day. Many of the proposed bills specifically target gender-expansive and transgender people and their families. These bills ignore scientific consensus and contradict the advice of all major U.S. medical associations, which recognize that access to healthcare as life-saving treatment.

LGBTQIA Individuals and families are being forced to seek sanctuary to obtain access to healthcare, employment, housing, and education due to extreme legislation that has passed in other states.

As Erie County Democrats, we admonish discrimination in all its forms. As a party that believes in equality for all, we stand in solidarity with LGBTQIA individuals who endure the ongoing threat of unimaginable infringements upon their basic human rights.
