LGBTQIA+ Community Needs to Be Counted in US Census 2020

In 2020 our community will have the unique opportunity to have our voice heard twice on the national level. Not only is 2020 a big election year but it is also a census year.  As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is a once every-decade count of everyone living in the United States. This count is vital to Erie County as it ensures we get our fair share of funding for programs in our schools, healthcare, and housing. Additionally, the census count determines our representation in Congress.

When the LGBTQIA population is counted we ensure our representation and let community leaders know we are important. Data from the census can help with anti-discrimination policies including fair voting, housing, and employee rights. The data helps to bring affordable healthcare to people in our community which keeps our young people safe and healthy.

Completing the census is quick and easy, it is only 9 questions and takes about 10 minutes. In March of 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau will send every household an invitation to complete a simple questionnaire about who lives at your address on April 1st. You will have the opportunity to respond online, by phone, or by mail, and federal law keeps those responses safe and secure. Shape your future and the future of our community by voting and participating in the 2020 Census.  Visit 2020CENSUS.GOV
