Speakers, film, reception at Chautauqua Institution July 2

There will be several events of interest at Chautauqua Institution July 2.

Judy Shepard, mother of Matthew Shepard will speak with Atlantic author James Fallows at 2pm at the Hall of Philosophy. Shepard founded the Matthew Shepard Foundation in honor of her son who brought international attention to anti-gay hate crimes when in 1998 he was brutally attacked, tied to fence and left to die in a field outside Laramie, Wyoming.

WorldPride/Stonewall 50th Panel The Rt. Rev. V. Gene Robinson, Chautauqua Institution Vice President of Religion and Senior Pastor, and the Episcopal Church's first openly gay bishop, will lead and participate in an intergenerational panel discussion on the LGBTQ rights movement before, during and after Stonewall. Panelists in addition to Bishop Robinson include Judy Shepard and Sultan Shakir. This event will be at the Hall of Philosophy at 3:30p.m. Official Event of Stonewall 50/WorldPride 2019. Chautauqua Cinema will show Dan Karslake's "For They Know Not What They Do" at 7PM Karslake, director/producer of "For The Bible Tells Me So," continues the conversation about the impact of religious belief on the lives of LGBTQ people. It challenges the far-right's use of the Bible and the U.S. Constitution to fight against equality for LGBTQ citizens and takes on the horrors of reparative therapy. Part of the Chautauqua Meet the Filmmaker Festival, featuring live Q&A. Film will be shown July 2-4. Visit chautauquacinema.com for directions and info.
