Transgender Law Center celebrates 15th anniversary with new video
(San Francisco, CA - October 24, 2017) – Last week, over 350 people came out to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Transgender Law Center (TLC) at SPARK!, the organization's annual event in San Francisco. TLC, the largest national trans-led organization advocating self-determination for all people, premiered a video at the event looking ahead to the future of trans movement-building.
"At TLC, we dare to dream differently, bigger, and with freedom and liberation always within our sight," TLC executive director Kris Hayashi said in his speech at the event. "We advocate, organize, and mobilize to keep people alive because this is not just about TLC, it's about the collective power we must build to sustain us down the long road to freedom."
The video that premiered at the event highlights the organization's growth over the past 15 years from a small legal shop focused on California to a national organization that joins together legal expertise, a commitment to racial justice, and community-driven strategies to keep transgender and gender nonconforming people alive, thriving, and fighting for liberation.
The event also featured a timeline of TLC's work since the organization's founding in 2002 as a project of the National Center for Lesbian Rights. Highlights included the launch of the Transgender Leadership Summit in 2006, TLC's groundbreaking legal victories on behalf of Mia Macy in 2012 and Tamara Lusardi in 2015 in their Title VII employment discrimination cases, the passage of California's Gender Non-Discrimination Act in 2004 and the School Success and Opportunity Act in 2013, and our victory this year on behalf of transgender Wisconsin student Ash Whitaker in the 7th Circuit.
