Pride Picnic Celebrated a 33-Year Tradition

By Bobbie Fenno

The NW PA Pride Alliance hosted its 33rd Annual Pride Picnic on Saturday, August 15, bringing LGBTQIA+ community members, friends, families, and allies together at Presque Isle State Park. The August 15 gathering at the Rotary Pavilion offered an opportunity to enjoy good food, conversation, and time together in a relaxed setting. While attendance was somewhat lighter than in previous years, the picnic continued its long tradition of bringing people together for an afternoon of community and connection.

As in years past, food was central to the celebration. Attendees were invited to bring a favorite dish to share, while NW PA Pride Alliance provided additional food and drinks. The potluck-style meal gave everyone plenty of opportunities to sit down, catch up with friends, and meet others from throughout the community.

The picnic also featured the annual Pride Picnic Family Portrait, bringing attendees together for a group photo. The tradition has become one of the event's highlights, creating a yearly snapshot of the people who make up and support Northwest Pennsylvania's LGBTQIA+ community.

Attendees could also enter a raffle for donated gift baskets, with proceeds supporting the work and programming of the NW PA Pride Alliance.

More than three decades after the first Pride Picnic, the event still offers something different from larger Pride celebrations. No big crowds or packed schedules. Just an afternoon to relax, share a meal, enjoy Presque Isle, and spend time with the queer community.

For those who attended this year's picnic, it was another opportunity to celebrate the connections that have helped sustain Erie's LGBTQIA+ community over the years. And after 33 years, the Pride Picnic remains a welcome summer tradition. Hope to see you next year!
