Erie's Queer Community Gathered Together for 30th Anniversary Family Photo
Written by: Bobbie Fenno
The Erie queer community came together to make history on October 11 and celebrate the 30th anniversary of Erie's first Family Photo, held in honor of National Coming Out Day. What began in 1995 with just 32 people has grown into a beloved tradition that embodies visibility, connection, and pride.
This year's Family Photo drew 79 members of our community, representing LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples, families, organizations, and friend groups from across the region. The energy was electric, filled with laughter, hugs, and the unmistakable joy of being seen and celebrated for simply being who you are.
Several participants from the original 1995 photo were also in attendance, creating a powerful link between generations. One especially touching moment came when a woman who appeared in that first photo at just five years old returned this year, now with her own newborn baby, to continue the legacy of love and visibility.
The event was organized by Erie Gay News, with sponsorships helping to fund an exciting milestone. EGN will distribute the first-ever full-color print edition of Erie Gay News, coming out on October 21. In addition to the large group photo, smaller group photos were taken for organizations, friend circles, and families, giving everyone a chance to feel represented.
This year's family photo and the upcoming color edition of Erie Gay News were made possible through the generous support of our sponsors: Aging with Pride, Central Outreach Wellness Center, Greater Erie Alliance for Equality, Mental Health Association of NW PA, and Werner Books and Coffee.
All event photos are available on the Erie Gay News website, www.eriegaynews.com and on our Facebook page Photo Gallery, www.facebook.com/ErieGayNews/. A heartfelt thank-you to everyone who joined us and helped make this 30th anniversary celebration one to remember.
