Celebrate Black Women's Herstory at the Carnegie Museum of Art on March 30, 2025

[Pittsburgh, PA March 4, 2025] Honoring Black Herstory Month and queer family stories of reconciliation from the diaspora, the Carnegie Museum of Art will host a screening of the documentary film "A Mother Apart" in Pittsburgh on March 30, 2025 at 2:00 pm.

A MOTHER APART is a new film by Canadian Laurie Townshend. It is a radical re-imagining of family and motherhood. The 89-minute documentary chronicles the international quest of award-winning Jamaican poet, author, and performance artist Staceyann Chin to find the mother who abandoned her in her youth and forge a healing relationship.

An unflinching travelogue exploring a creative life and bittersweet memories, the film follows Staceyann's decades-long odyssey from Brooklyn to Jamaica, Canada, and Europe. Her search is for reconciliation with a distant mother while raising her own young daughter with love, respect, and wisdom. It is a gripping story of a brave journey leading Staceyann to a new definition of home.
