The Silent Secret - SafeNet hosts 21st Annual Medical Conference

(ERIE, Pa) SafeNet's 21th Annual Medical Conference on Intimate Partner Violence will be held Tuesday, October 3, from 8 am until 4 pm at the Ambassador Conference Center, 7794 Peach Street, in Erie.

Intimate Partner Violence: The Silent Secret aims to provide medical professionals and community members with an expanded knowledge of intimate partner violence. Keynote speakers for this year's event include the following professionals and presentations:

Know More, Do More: Recognizing and Responding to Stalking: Dana Fleitman, Training and Awareness Specialist, Stalking Prevention, Awareness and Resource Center (SPARC). Fleitman will discuss how to identify stalking behaviors and dynamics, apply strategies for working with victims of stalking, and how to recognize intersections of stalking with other crimes.

Because We Didn't Know: Why Strangulation Matters So Much: William Smock, MD, a full time police surgeon and director of the Clinical Forensic Medicine Program for Louisville Metro Police Department in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Smock is an expert on strangulation who made headlines as an expert witness in the Derek Chauvin murder trial. His experience with strangulation made him a key expert in the George Floyd case. Dr. Smock discusses the top 25 medical complications that can result from strangulation, documenting evidence for prosecution, and more. Dr. Smock will also be working with local law enforcement officials in breakout sessions.

Divorce Doesn't Mean She's Free, An Honest Look at Post-Separation Abuse: Janna Leadbetter, of Woman Determined Creative Works and Advocacy. Leadbetter will discuss the use of law to perpetuate abuse, post-divorce isolation and limitation, shared custody and counter-parenting, and trauma and expense of family court.

The conference will include a keynote speech during lunch, break-out sessions, and conclude with closing remarks.
