ERIE, Pa. - Entre Plantas y Mujeres will open July 13 in the Frenzel Gallery. An opening reception will take place at 6 pm with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and a tour of the exhibition. The artist and curator, Ana Balcazar will debut a newly commissioned body of work, created during her residency at the Museum in response to the Museum's Collection. "We are thrilled to have Balcazar's premiere solo museum exhibition in the United States as our inaugural artist residency," states Laura Domencic, Executive Director of the Erie Art Museum. Entre Plantas y Mujeres(between plants and women) will feature both Balcazar's works and curated Museum Collection art pieces.
Balcazar is a Peruvian multidisciplinary visual artist and educator who works with painting, murals and illustration exploring new imagery of women and botanicals. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Latin America, United States, and Europe, among cities like Berlin, Tallinn, Washington D.C., California, México D.F., and Lima. Her work is included in collections such the Hochschild Collection (Lima), and TD Bank Miami Collection. Between 2016 and 2019 she was professor at Toulouse Lautrec Institute in Lima.
In 2022, Balcazar's most recent work was displayed in Erie in three different Solo Shows, with the largest being Botanicals at 1020 Collective. Furthermore, she was invited to paint her first mural in the United States for the Purposeful Placemaking Project by Erie Arts & Culture.
