Michigan's legislature passed comprehensive lgbtq+ non-discrimination protections

LGBTQ+ Michiganders won permanent protections for sexual orientation and gender identity in the state's civil rights act, forbidding housing and public accommodations discrimination.

Democrats took full control of the Michigan legislature and governor's office this year, allowing them a strong chance of passing the bill. Governor Whitmer has promised to sign the bill.

In the 2022 midterm elections, mobilization efforts of the HateWon'tWin coalition helped to re-elect Governor Whitmer and elect a majority that supports equality. The coalition was made up of Equality Michigan, Human Rights Campaign, ACLU, community organizations and other organizations across the state.
