Erie Art Museum Presents Paintings by Béatrice Lebreton and David King

Erie, PA - The Erie Art Museum continues to bring diverse and creative exhibitions to the region. August 5th, the Museum kicked off two new exhibitions by painters Béatrice Lebreton, from New York and David King, from Cleveland.

Lebreton's exhibition, Living Her Truth: Transcending Boundaries, will run from August 5th, 2021 until May 8th, 2022. King's Exhibition, Time Travel, will run from August 5th, 2021 until February 6th, 2022.

Lebreton's exhibition uses the rich vocabulary of her blended cultural heritage and draws her inspiration from traditional African motifs and cosmology. Lebreton's quest is to weave a visual story through metaphorical use of symbols tying the past to the present. She reinterprets these symbols to convey the spiritual potential of Africa's cultures to contemporary viewers, as they become a visual link between

the past and the present. Celebrating womanhood and particularly women of color, her works are more "representations" of women instead of "portraits." Placing them in dynamic colorful patterns, they are lifted out of the everyday setting and relocated into the realm that honors women's vital roles in society.

Lebreton was born in Tours, France and has traveled throughout Europe and Africa. In Paris, she earned her Master of Art and Aesthetics from La Sorbonne University and a MFA from Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts. She came to the US in 1986 and lives in New York City. She has exhibited extensively nationally, and created numerous public art works in Texas, New York and Florida.

Time Travel features paintings that analyze our ability to recapture the reality of the past. Inspired by a treasure of 50+ year old family movie reels, events blur, and reality is augmented with fabrication. Time Travel explores the phenomenon of nostalgia and the ever-dissolving memories held within us all. King uses real photographs from friends, family, and others, to then alter them visually through rearrangements, editing, or fading details. What is left behind is a fabrication, yet one that represents a past moment in time. Through his use of color King captures the spirit of the mind's desperation to "preserve the disintegrating glances into our memories."

King was born in Stow, Ohio and received his MFA in Painting from Kent State University. His work is in several collections and has shown in several Nicole and Harry Martin Annual Spring Shows at the Erie Art Museum, as well as galleries throughout Ohio and the United States.
