Fight. Sleep. Repeat. That's life for 14-year-old SoCal skate-punk Wylie Masterson. Like most teens, Wylie struggles with authority, puberty, and family. But Wylie is transgender, which brings up a whole range of struggles that his body, family and community are not equipped to help him through. An #ownvoices story, call me him is by trans author River Braun who has worked with teens at The Trevor Project. The Trevor Project, along with The Human Rights Campaign and Trans Law Center will receive all royalties from sales of call me him.
"I write books about transgender protagonists to help bring awareness to the trans/non-binary experience, in the hopes that future generations may not have to face the same obstacles that my generation faced," Braun says. "Less than 2% of young adult novels feature transgender characters. When a person encounters a character in a book that they can relate to, they are validated. Their experience is validated. Great strides are being made to bring transgender experiences into focus, but far more needs to be done."
