With the rise of cultural awareness around the pervasive issue of sexual assault, serious questions are being asked about how boys are raised to understand consent and their own sexuality. To help answer these questions, Inti Chavez Perez, the Swedish government's appointed expert on sexual health, has written the first sex education book centered on consent.
RESPECT: Everything a Guy Needs to Know About Sex, Love, and Consent is a comprehensive guide to sex education aimed at teen boys, their parents, and any man hoping to fill the gaps in his own knowledge. Chavez Perez draws on his vast experience as Sweden's leading sex educator to lay out how to build positive, respectful relationships with friends and partners, and how consent factors into every stage of relationships. Sweden has been a world leader in sex education since it became the first country to mandate it in all school curriculums in 1956, which gives Chavez Perez a unique outlook on how sex education can be improved throughout the United States.
Using casual and comprehensible language, a wide array of relatable examples, and an assortment of interactive exercises to improve relationships with oneself and others, RESPECT is the ultimate education supplement. Chavez Perez writes with a no-question-is-too-small mentality to impart crucial lessons, such as:
- "Yes" and "No" signals of consent to look out for and how to interpret them, all the way from flirting to engaging in sexual intercourse
- Sexting and laws of consent in a digital age
- Ways to show respect for yourself and others, such as stopping the spread of rumors, engaging in active listening, and emotional labor equally
- How to explore one's gender identity and sexuality, including advice on coming out, a glossary of sexual orientations, and how to confront ignorance
- Protecting one's sexual health, including how to deal with STDs and STIs
- Examples of behavior that is pressuring, judgmental, or violent
Inclusive of all types of romantic and sexual relationships from monogamous to non-monogamous, and from heterosexual to across the LGBTQ+ spectrum, RESPECT is a definitive guide that every guy should read.
