With Spike in Hate Crimes, TLC Urges Survivors to Report to Communities Against Hate

Transgender Law Center (TLC) is urging survivors of hate crimes to report incidents to Communities Against Hatea collaborative project to build a national database on hate crimes, and connect survivors to resources and services. Reports can be made through the website or through a resource hotline: 1-844-NO-HATE (1-844-966-4283).

"The news this weekend from New York that another transgender woman, Brenda Bostick, has died after being viciously assaulted is a bleak reminder of the crisis of violence against transgender people," said Kris Hayashi, TLC's Executive Director. "That crisis, fueled by hateful rhetoric and public policy, has for too long gone unseen and unacknowledged." Brenda Bostick was the tenth transgender woman of color – and 9th black transgender woman murdered in 2017 that we know of.

Communities Against Hate, convened by the Leadership Conference Education Fund and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights, brings together a diverse set 11 civil rights organization in a concerted effort to document hate crimes and demand action. The groups represent the Black, Latinx, LGBTQ, Muslim and Arab communities, as well as women.

The hotline is a resource for organizations and individuals working to combat hate in their communities. Through the hotline, trained staff and volunteers will provide access to legal resources, including pro bono attorneys when appropriate, and connections to mental health services or other community organizations and resources.
