The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell by William Klaber

THE LOST MEMOIR OF AN OUTLANDISH LADY

One day in 1855, Lucy Lobdell cut her hair, and put on britches. She did it to earn men's wages, but the changes went far beyond anything she had imagined. The Rebellion of Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell, recently released by St. Martin's Press, is the account of Lucy's extraordinary foray into the world of men and her inward journey to a new sexual identity. It's her promised memoir, as heard and recorded a century later by William Klaber, an upstream neighbor. "Lucy lived at a time when women did not commonly carry a rifle, sit down in bars, or have romantic liaisons with other women," says Klaber. "Lucy did these things in a personal quest—to work and be paid, to wear what she wanted and to love whomever she cared to."

The New York Times thought Lucy's escapades worthy of a huge send off. "DEATH OF A MODERN DIANA" trumpeted the headline in 1879, "Dressed in Man's Clothing She Win's a Girl's Love." And the obit would have been larger still if the Times had known of Lucy's years as a man on the western frontier, her arrest and trial for the crime of wearing men's clothes, or her jailbreak, engineered by her wife Marie Perry to whom she'd been married by an unsuspecting judge—the first same-sex marriage in America.

Lucy promised to write a book about her "adventures in male attire," but that book was never found. Instead, more than a century later, author William Klaber received the gift of a satchel filled with letters and other documents concerning Lucy's life. Recognizing the historical importance, Klaber set out to do justice to a piece of forgotten Americana—to tell what happened to Miss Lucy Ann Lobdell once she changed into pants.

Early reviews have been excellent. "A unique and important book," said PW which gave Rebellion a starred review, as did Library Journal. Booklist called Rebellion "an early contender for 2015's best lists." "Memorable, joyous prose," said The New York Times in a recent glowing review in its Sunday Book Review, and according to OutSmart Magazine, "This book is too good to miss."

William Klaber lives in upstate New York. A graduate of Wesleyan and NYU Law, Mr. Klaber is best known for producing the acclaimed radio documentary, The RFK Tapes and co-authoring Shadow Play (St. Martins, 1997). Rebellion is his first foray into fiction. Published by St. Martin's Press, it is available in print and e-book formats via Amazon.com or Barnes&Noble.com.
