FDA Approves Twice-Yearly Injectable HIV PrEP

Erie County Department of Health

Recently the US Food and Drug Administration approved Lenacapavir as a new HIV prevention tool. This is a new twice a year injection breakthrough option. Individuals finding it hard to take daily pills, injections can be easier. Cabotegravir was the first injected HIV prevention med. That version, released by ViiV Healthcare as Apretude, is taken other month [about 60 days apart]. The new Lenacapavir takes injections from six to two per year. This new option begins with a combo pill/shot lead-in to start the medicine and then turns into shots only. Studies are being done for even better options including a once per year shot.
