Temple Anshe Hesed Pride Shabbat on June 20

The name of Erie's Reform Jewish temple, Anshe Hesed, is Hebrew for "People of Kindness." This name perfectly encapsulates the temple's acceptance and welcoming of the LGBTQ community. Many members of Temple Anshe Hesed are part of the LGBTQ community, and the temple takes part in Pride celebrations every June. Temple member Kris Haas explains, "When we came to temple, very early on Rabbi told us that [my wife and I] were far from the first lesbian coupleand that was a huge thing for me. Knowing that there were others and that I wouldn't have to hide the most important person in my life for fear of being ostracized."

Reform Judaism has upheld the principle that everyone is created B'tzelem Elohimin the Divine image (Genesis 1:27). This belief underscores the sacred worth of every person, affirming LGBTQ+ individuals within our synagogues and Jewish community.

According to Keshet, a national organization advocating for LGBTQ equality in Jewish life, LGBTQ inclusion aligns well with core Jewish values, such as solidarity with community members and loving your neighbor as yourself. By striving for LGBTQ equality and ensuring an open and welcoming community, Temple Anshe Hesed live s out these core values through action.

Temple Anshe Hesed is proud to be a strong support system for the LGBTQ community. This year's Pride Shabbat will take place on Friday, June 20th at 6:15 at #1 Enclosed Shelter, Loop Pavilion. All are welcome to join.
