Schwab drew inspiration for Exteriors from Ryûsuke Hamaguchi's Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy, a film that profoundly impacted him. The decision to revisit characters from his 2021 film Brotherly Lies was sparked by a conversation with his husband about world-building in cinema. Characters Shane, Kenny, and Lex return in supporting roles that catalyze key conflicts for Wyatt, Jason, and Peter, allowing audiences to witness the growthor regressionof these familiar figures.
The production embraced varied cinematography and pacing to give each story its own voice while maintaining a cohesive tone. Returning actors Pano Tsaklas, Fernando, and Jacob Betts were instrumental in bridging the world of Brotherly Lies with Exteriors.
