Warnock's Win Marks Major Victory for LGBTQ+ Equality
GEORGIA - December 6, 2022 - Georgians re-elected U.S. Senator Raphael Warnock to a full six-year term this evening, repudiating months of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and millions of dollars in anti-LGBTQ+ advertising from his opponent, Herschel Walker, that sought to attack the LGBTQ+ community for political gain.
Warnock has long been an unwavering ally of the LGBTQ+ community, as evidenced by his co-sponsorship of the Respect for Marriage Act, legislation to protect marriage equality that is expected to become law soon, as well as the Equality Act, which extends comprehensive protections from discrimination to the LGBTQ+ community.
Human Rights Campaign President Kelley Robinson issued the following statement tonight:
"We are delighted to congratulate Senator Warnock on his re-election tonight. Senator Warnock is one of our strongest partners in advancing the cause of LGBTQ+ equality. He understands that every person in Georgia and across the United States deserves to live their lives knowing that they are respected for who they are and free from the pain of bigotry and discrimination.
"It should not be lost on anyone that Senator Warnock's political opponents spent millions of dollars attacking him for his support for our community. They have failed. Georgians rejected these reckless attacks tonight. We look forward to continuing our work with Senator Warnock to ensure that every LGBTQ+ person in Georgia, and throughout this country, is treated with dignity."
