Statement on Trump Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barrett

"Coney Barrett on the bench of the nation's highest court would be a nightmare for LGBTQ+ civil rights for decades to come…"?

LOS ANGELES - September 25, 2020 - After the New York Times and Politico confirmed on Friday that President Trump will nominate Judge Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacancy left by Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the United States Supreme Court, Equality California, the nation's largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the follow statement from Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur:

"In over three decades as a lawyer and LGBTQ+ civil rights advocate, I've never been this fearful for our courts, our civil rights and our democracy.

"Trump's decision to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court just weeks before the presidential election is a heinous power grab in and of itself, but to nominate an anti-LGBTQ+, anti-choice extremist like Amy Coney Barrett is a broadside attack on decades of progress and on Justice Ginsburg's legacy. Coney Barrett on the bench of the nation's highest court would be a nightmare for LGBTQ+ civil rights for decades to come and her opposition to Roe v. Wade, voting rights, the ACA and other progressive decisions are simply disqualifying.

"The Supreme Court belongs to America -?to all of us -?not just one party or one politician. We urge the U.S. Senate to honor Justice Ginsburg's final wish and block any nomination until after the inauguration."
