NFL's Michael Sam: Video Statement on LGBT Rights and Fight in Missouri

April 20, 2016 - NFL star Michael Sam was on the ground in Missour today to fight an anti-LGBT bill that would authorize discrimination in the name of religion. The bill is up for a vote in committee and he joined hundreds of advocates and allies to call on the Missouri legislature to stop this harmful measure.

Michael Sam said:

"Missouri is my home. It's so important to speak about this issue and stopping SJR39 from passing in the house. If this does pass, I think this will be a great loss for the LGBT community in the state of Missouri."

ACLU Advocacy and Policy Counsel Eunice Rho said:

"This harmful bill before the Missouri legislature would authorize discrimination against loving couples who are seeking to exercise their constitutional  right to legally wed. Senate Joint Resolution 39 must be stopped in its tracks from ever becoming law. We're grateful to Michael Sam for lending his voice and for being brave, alongside many others who believe in equality and fairness, including over 200 major corporations, religious leaders, and Missourians from all walks of life."

More on the bill: Missouri, SJR39: A broad FADA-like religious exemptions constitutional amendment would allow religiously-affiliated organizations receiving state funds, businesses, and individuals to discriminate against , same sex couples, children of same-sex couples, LGBT youth and more is expected to come to a vote in the House Emerging Issues committee today. The bill was filibustered on the Senate floor for a record 39.5 hours, but was forced to a vote and passage in that chamber last month. Voices of opposition include: the state and local chambers (St. Louis and Kansas City); big companies like Square, Dow Chemical, and Monsanto; the NCAA; and the first openly gay NFL player and Missourian Michael Sam. During today's hearing, we expect the measure could be voted on. If the legislature passes this bill, it would go on the ballot for a public vote either in a special or general election, to be determined by the Governor.
