GLSEN Reacts to Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson's Call for Changes to Religious Freedom Restoration Act
NEW YORK (April 1, 2015) – GLSEN's Executive Director, Dr. Eliza Byard, reacts to Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson's refusal to sign HB 1228, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and instead asking the Arkansas legislature to recall and revise the bill.
"We are glad that Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson refused to sign the current version of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), which would have legalized discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people in Arkansas. But let's be clear: this isn't about finding the "right" RFRA.
"These laws are unnecessary. Our Constitution already protects religious liberty. The rush to pass these overly broad measures despite the lack of evidence that a need for them exists, can only be understood as a response to the progress being made by LGBT people.
"These laws send a horrific message to LGBT students, especially; the vast majority of whom in Arkansas, Indiana and across the country face daily harassment and exclusion simply because of who they are. Instead of addressing this real crisis, these legislatures and governors have chosen to turn their backs on LGBT people. We demand that full protections for LGBT individuals be added to any RFRAs so that true freedoms are extended to everyone."
