FREE DAYS WITH GEORGE by Bestselling Author Colin Campbell
LIFE'S LITTLE LESSONS TAUGHT BY ONE VERY BIG DOG
New York, New York – (March 21, 2016) – Free Days with George (Penguin Random House) by bestselling author Colin Campbell will release in the U.S. Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Free Days with George is the remarkable true story of a 140-pound homeless dog named George and his human Colin, who felt like his life was crumbling around him. George teaches Colin the real meaning of happiness and hope through their connection which transcends a lot of things we know about loyalty and love.
"George is the dog who changed my life. When I was at my worst, he was there to comfort me. He was homeless when I took him in as a "rescue" but as it turns out, he's really the one who rescued me," remarks Campbell. Free Days with George is his story but it's also the story of any of us who have experienced loss or heartache. It's a book about love, hope and second chances that we all eventually need at some point in our lives."
When Colin Campbell, a happily married, successful marketing executive, went on a short business trip he returned home to find out his wife had moved out. No explanations, no discussion, no second chances. Shocked and heartbroken, Campbell fell into a spiral of depression. With the encouragement of his colleagues and friends he eventually agreed to entertain the idea of adopting a dog to keep him company. It was then that Colin met a neglected, homeless 140-pound Newfoundland Landseer, a breed renowned for its gentle nature and remarkable swimming abilities.
Colin adopted the traumatized dog, brought him home and named him George. Both man and dog were at first lacking trust, but together they learned how to overcome their own anxieties and bad experiences. At the same time Colin was able to embrace an important childhood memory of "free days." a life-lesson given to him by his beloved grandfather.
Everything changed quickly for Colin after he and George began their life together. He was offered a new job in California where George soon became a fixture in his Hermosa Beach neighborhood. When Colin headed to the beach to try his hand at surfing, George tagged along and encountered the ocean and a surfboard for the first time. He then did a very surprising thing - he jumped right up on the board and tried surfing himself. Through these experiences Colin and George started an amazing adventure together resulting in a life-altering healing process. Their experience also rekindles Colin's childhood memories enjoying "free days" with his grandfather.
"When I was a little boy, my younger brother and I were blessed with the good fortune of having a grandfather, a decorated WWII Veteran who landed on Normandy Beach, who loved us deeply and went out of his way to make sure we celebrated life together as a family. We spent our summers together at the beach, building sand castles, swimming, and having picnics," said Campbell. "At the end of each day, my grandfather would tuck us into bed and tell us 'Today was a free day boys...' We would ask him what is a free day grandpa? He would smile and say a free day is when you spend the day with people who love you, doing things you love to do. When those two things happen - you don't get old. It's a free day on earth. As I grew older, I lost my ability to remember and feel free days. George helped me recognize and recapture that in my life and the book shares this journey with readers."
Campbell writes openly about his struggles and then recognizing and accepting the emotional power of a man's best friend making Free Days with George one of the most uplifting inspirational stories of the year. Despite his own trauma and rough start in life, George's sweet personality and wisdom of an old soul emerges throughout the book which makes apparent that he indeed rescued his new human friend.
Campbell states "When people read his story, or meet George in person you can see the smiles, and the warm impression he leaves with everyone." The book has become the darling of conversations among film producers.
Free Days with George has been described as a "cross between Marley and Me, Tuesdays with Morrie and Eat, Pray, Love" immediately became a bestseller in Canada when it was released in 2015 and will now be available in bookstores across the U.S. and online Tuesday, May 3, 2016. Free Days with George will be supported by a 6 week, 24 city cross-country tour aboard the Free Days with George tour bus.
