Civil and Human Rights Coalition Condemns Administration's New Instructions on Transgender Student Discrimination

WASHINGTON - June 16, 2017 -In response to the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights Instructions to the Field Regarding Complaints Involving Transgender Students, Vanita Gupta, president and CEO of The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, issued the following statement:

"In February, in a mean-spirited move, Secretary DeVos and Attorney General Sessions rescinded important guidance clarifying schools' obligations under Title IX to protect transgender students from discrimination. The unclear instructions issued by the Department of Education sow a new level of confusion and doubt for students, families and schools. Federal court rulings are increasingly on the side of transgender students, even if Secretary DeVos and Attorney General Sessions are not. The civil and human rights community continues to stand united, supporting the right of every student to be treated with dignity and respect, and to be protected by the law regardless of gender identity."
