ERIE COUNTY, PA: National HIV Testing Day is a nationwide annual initiative to raise awareness and encourage testing for HIV. In recognition of the day the Erie County HIV Task Force led by the Erie County Department of Health will be offering free rapid HIV and rapid syphilis testing on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at the following locations:
- Desired Designs Salon, 1819 Buffalo Road, Erie PA from 1:00pm-3:00pm. Free food and drinks will be offered while clients wait for their test results and all participants will receive a Country Fair gift card. TESTING AT THIS LOCATION IS CANCELLED.
- Community Health Net, 1202 State St, 2nd floor, Erie PA from 9:00am-3:00pm. All participants will receive a Country Fair gift card.
The Erie County Department of Health encourages everyone in Erie County from ages 15 to 65 who are sexually active or IV drug users to minimally get tested annually for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In the United States, about 1 in 8 people or about 156,300 people who have HIV don’t know it. We want to make HIV testing a routine practice in all healthcare settings.
The only way to know for sure whether or not you have HIV is to get tested. You could have HIV and still feel healthy. There are medications and treatment for HIV. Knowing your HIV status allows the opportunity for early treatment and control of the infection. Delays in treatment can lead to further HIV transmission and reduction in the length and quality of life for these individuals.
