Pittsburgh - June 2, 2016 – Equality PA Executive Director, Ted Martin, thanked Sen. Bob Casey today for signing on to co-sponsor the Equality Act (S 1858). The Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and sex in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system.

Martin said, "Most people are shocked to learn that there are currently no federal or state protections to prevent gay and transgender people from being discriminated against in employment, housing or business and government services. All people deserve to be protected from discrimination in order to be able to build a life for themselves and their families. That's why we are so grateful to Sen. Casey for showing leadership on this critical issue by co-sponsoring the Equality Act in the US Senate."

Martin encouraged state leaders to follow in Sen. Casey's footsteps. "We can also ban discrimination at the state level in Pennsylvania, and we hope that state leaders will follow Sen. Casey's leadership in co-sponsoring the PA Fairness Act in Harrisburg—and pushing that legislation forward this year."

The Equality Act and the PA Fairness Act both await action in Congress and in the Pennsylvania State Legislature.
