The 10 Year Plan

About The 10 Year Plan

Myles (Jack Turner) has only ever wanted to find true love.  His best friend Brody (Michael Adam Hamilton) has only ever wanted to find the next conquest.  As long as they have been friends, Brody has picked up the pieces of Myles' broken heart after every failed attempt to find love, so in one brilliant moment of support, drafts a contract on a bar napkin stating that if in ten years, they are both still single, they will become a couple to live happily ever after.  But nearly ten years later, Myles is still searching for his man…and Brody has to find him fast or he's going to get stuck with the deal he made so many years before!

The hilarious and often touching film is written and directed by JC Calciano (Is it Just Me and eCupid - as well as the hugely popular webseries called Steam Room Stories) who in my opinion feels like the Gary Marshall of independent gay cinema.  And with gay marriage and gay rights issues at the forefront of the media, it feels like the perfect time to take "gay" out of gay cinema and just call it a great film.

The 10 Year Plan

Q&A WITH WRITER/DIRECTOR JC CALCIANO

Where did the inspiration for the film come from?
The 10 Year Plan is actually inspired by two of my best friends. They made a 10 year plan just like Brody and Myles do in the film. Ten years later, they both panicked because they weren't interested in each other romantically and didn't want to hurt each other's feelings. It seemed like a great jumping off point for a movie. The difference is now the real-life inspiration for Brody is in a committed relationship; unfortunately the real Myles is still looking.

What are the central themes of The 10 Year Plan?
All my films explore themes of love and relationships. I always found it intriguing to explore the line where friendship turns into love. Your lover is you your best friend, but why isn't your best friend your lover? That's what The 10 Year Plan is about.

Why have you decided to fund the film via IndieGoGo?
My partner, Matt Solari, and I are actually financing the majority of the film from our own savings. We love this story and are willing to work for free to get it made, but we want to get a really great (and sexy) cast. That's why we're reaching out to fans, friends and lovers of independent movies to help us make up the difference between what money we have and what money we need.

You've had big hits with Is It Just Me? and eCupid. How does The 10 Year Plan fit alongside those movies?
The 10 Year Plan is the third in that series of romantic comedies. I plan on packaging the three films together as a box set. I hope to have fun cameo appearances from cast members of Is It Just Me? and eCupid and tie all three story worlds together.

Good quality films for gay audiences can be hard to come by. Being one of the leading quality LGBT filmmakers in the industry, tell us the secret your success.
I make the movies that I want to see. I love funny and sweet date movies about two people falling in love. Even though my films are gay-themed, they are universal stories that everyone can relate to. I just try to make good old-fashioned love stories about two people - who just happen to be gay.

What are the biggest challenges of being an independent filmmaker?
Money. I love making movies and webisodes. Nothing is more rewarding than getting emails from fans telling us much they love what we are doing and how our films
touch their lives. That makes it all worthwhile. But movies are expensive to make, distribute and market. Most LGBT indie films don't get shown in movie theaters or on TV, so there is no money there. DVD is quickly going away, and VOD and downloads only pay a few dollars. That means these films don't get made unless they have the support of the fans. That's the biggest challenge – and also the biggest opportunity. Fans and filmmakers can now have a closer relationship that is much more rewarding. Audiences are more involved. That's what I'm really excited about.

How much fan feedback do you get and does that influence what you do from project to project?
We get an incredible amount of feedback from fans. We get feedback on a daily basis. Fans send us the most beautiful and heartfelt emails about how these stories have changed their lives. It's incredibly inspiring and motivates us to keep making more. With over 29 million views on YouTube, Steam Room Stories has a very active and vocal fan community. Quite a few of the episodes were suggested directly by the fans. What I love about the web series is that the feedback is instant and you get to communicate directly with the viewers.
