Doubling Up by Paul Verity

Too often, the rights of LGBT individuals are viewed solely through the lens of civil issues, such as gay marriage, adoption or employment discrimination. Is there a better way in which we can work toward tackling these issues?

Through an entertaining and thought-provoking story in his debut novel, Doubling Up, author and lawyer Paul Verity takes a unique and timely look at gay rights through the prism of the criminal justice system.

“When I considered the issue of equality for LGBT people, it struck me that they are a minority, historically subject to discrimination and even violence, a characteristic shared by African-Americans during the evolution of the law concerning civil rights,” says Verity. “However, discussions regarding gay rights are typically focused on civil issues. This inspired me to look at these rights in the same way African-American’s rights were viewed in the first half of the twentieth century.”

Following the story of Matt Durant, a young criminal attorney, avid boxer and closeted gay man, Verity’s research and inspiration is brought to life. In Doubling Up, Durant and a new friend are the victims of a vicious hate crime, which, thanks to Durant’s years of boxing training, leads to the death of one of their attackers. From there, Durant’s life spirals out of control as he faces murder charges, his sexuality and the criminal justice system all while hoping to regain his freedom.
