Senators introduce legislation to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy
WASHINGTON, March 3 — Legislation to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on openly lesbian, gay and bisexual service members was introduced today in the U.S. Senate by Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), along with 11 other co-sponsors. Lieberman, Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Roland Burris (D-Ill.) held a press conference today to discuss the repeal effort and introduce the bill.Statement by Rea Carey, Executive Director of National Gay and Lesbian Task Force
“We continue to advocate for the full repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ an outdated, unnecessary and immoral policy that discriminates against courageous and qualified people who are willing and proud to serve their country. We thank these senators today for introducing legislation to repeal the military ban, which marks an important step in the right direction. We also urge once again for the immediate halt to all discharges of service members because of their sexual orientation until Congress finally fulfills its responsibility to overturn this archaic, unjust law. Several other countries have already implemented equality in the armed services without issue. It’s long past time for the United States to do the same. It's long past time to place fairness above foot-dragging.”
