Memorial Day Festival Remains on Sunday, South Park
With the recent beautiful springtime weather, you’ve probably been yearning for an outside picnic party. Well, the 31st Annual Delta Foundation Memorial Day Festival benefiting the Steel City Softball League is fast approaching. It will still have all of the fun you’ve come to expect, including dancing with several guest DJ’s, picnic food & beverages (of course that does include the beer truck), the Midway Madness vending booths, live bands, Drag Queen Bar Wars, and the dunk tank.
Last year’s move to Sunday proved to be a great adjustment. (guess everyone loved not having to call off sick from work on Tuesday!) It will be held May 28th at 11am. The event once again will be held at the South Park Fairgrounds. The South Park location includes several large indoor areas, so who cares if we get a little rain? There is plenty of room to move the entire event indoors if necessary. Those indoor areas do include 2 dance halls, which means in addition to the traditional club style dancing, there will be a country music hall with line dancing instructors. Also included this year will be a softball field & huge volleyball courts. There’s even convenient parking & all restrooms will be indoors (so no more trudging through the mud to the port-a-potties!). Also returning this year will be a free shuttle service from the T stop at Lytle Road (Bethel Park, Park & Ride lot). Which means you can park your car or take the bus downtown, ride the 47L to the Fairgrounds, & then return that evening to continue partying downtown Sunday night.
This year we are extremely pleased to announce that the band Spouse will be performing. This popular New England band has performed throughout the east coast and at several clubs in Pittsburgh. With their 4th album to be released soon, we are very excited to have them performing this year!!! John Lefler, from the Northeast Performer describes Spouse as….
“jangling guitars, snappy bass lines, and clean sounding keyboards populating the airspace and creating a crisply layered and gleamingly produced gem of an album.”
Now the best part of all is that all this fun is still the same price as last year, $20 advance or $25 at the gate. Price includes entrance to all events, food, soft drinks, and beer. Tickets will be available for sale at area gay establishments. See the upcoming Festival ad or SteelCitySoftball.org for the complete list. Also, tickets may be purchased on line this year through Paypal on the SteelCitySoftball.org website.
If your group would like to volunteer to help the committee, please contact MemorialDayFestival@comcast.net. The Festival is also a great opportunity for all GLBT non-profit organizations to promote their causes while helping to make the event more fun. Set up a booth free of charge; creativity is encouraged & will help add to the atmosphere. Businesses wishing to sell their arts and crafts or services can acquire booth space for a $100 fee. The committee is also looking for bar sponsored drag queens to participate in the Bar Wars & additional musical bands to perform.
So get your sun block, dancing shoes, & your appetite ready! This years’ Memorial Day Festival promises to be one not to miss!!!
The South Park Fairgrounds are located in South Park near the intersection of Brownsville Road & Corrigan Drive. The park is accessible from 51 South, via Brownsville Road. Once in the park, follow the signs to the Fairgrounds. You may contact the Festival committee at MemorialDayFestival@comcast.net, or call (412) 683-7676, ext 3.
