Holiday cards on the fireplace - 2009

It may be a silly tradition, but it’s mine, darn it! Every year, I tape the holiday cards that I get to the fireplace and then take a photo. I was bad this year – money was kind of tight, so I skipped sending cards out this time. Hopefully, next year things will be better.

It really makes me feel warm and fuzzy to have so many good people in my life. I have a lot to be grateful for.

My dog Heracles decided to pull a Crasher Squirrel and got in the photo.

Sigh. I was out walking the dogs late tonight and when I rounded the halfway point in Frontier Park, the dogs got a little agitated. It was a skunk! I have a crappy sense of smell, and I was working on bustling them out of there as quickly as possible. When I got home, Hecate didn’t smell like she was affected, but Heracles seemed to have gotten a good dose. So, down to the downstairs bathroom with vinegar and baking soda. Hopefully, I got it all out.

I have been working on catching up on calendar data entry stuff this weekend. At end end of the year, I try to key in all of the regularly recurring events into the Erie Gay News calendar for the following year. I have been sending an email each month with reminders, but also keying in events in to other online calendars. So, I decided to bite the bullet and just line up a few tabs in browsers and get it all out of the way. It was sort of grueling, but I think that I only have 1 more group to key in. Then I should probably start in some some Pagan stuff to get those out of the way as well.

I went to Presque Isle Gallery Coffeehouse and Gallery for the Peace Jam, and the LBT Women were meeting as well. I was impressed with how well organized they are and what a fun bunch. I really admire how they have worked to build an incredible social network of friends.

So, finally finishing making dinner now (Virgin White Chili) and hoping to get the last of the chores done.

I got an email from Mom, who has been quite busy. She mentioned that she, my brother, Steve and his girlfriend, Karen went to get Steve and Karen's cats fixed. They had been under the impression that Gizmo (Steve's cat) and Gus (Karen's cat) were brothers/litter mates.

Apparently, it turns out that Gizmo was not a male, and her name is now Gyzmeau to reflect her updated gender status. They apparently had a pretty good laugh at finding out about the confusion.

My brother Steve, who lives downstairs from his girlfriend, Karen, had a neighbor and myself over today for some leftovers and hanging out. Their neighbor Jeff was there as well.

My brother showed me his cat, Gizmo, who is the litter mate to Gus, who belongs to his girlfriend, Karen. They are the kittens of my Mom's cat, Kharma. They got all 3 cats from an animal shelter. Apparently someone had tried to drown Kharma and her 8 kittens. 6 of the kittens died, so Steve and Karen figured that they would adopt the survivors. Gizmo is much smaller (Miss Junior Petite Thing), and Gus shows all signs of being a Grande Diva Extra Large.

Dog breed meme

I forget whose blog I originally saw this at, but it was a fun meme.

What dog breed are you? I'm a Golden Retriever! Find out at Dogster.com

Is this some kind of twisted performance art piece?!?! What kind of person actually thinks that a human being is justified in killing a house cat that poses no threat. Yes, I could see if someone was being threatened by a possibly rabid animal that one might have to take extreme measures.

But killing someone's pet and then saying that the animal provoked the human being? Last I checked, human beings had superior decision making skills.

Seriously, this is either some kind of elaborate put on or this columnist is a vile person. Maybe both. I have heard that the NY Post tends to be rather sensationalistic, but this is totally nuts.

Any time you attack an innocent animal, a child or someone who is incapacitated, it is never good.

FELONIOUS BALL OF FUR DESERVED EVERY BLOW

By ANDREA PEYSER

THE stupid cat had it coming.

Forgive me, all you animal- rights nuts, you freaky lovers of things furry, fierce and woefully incontinent. I've got something to say to all assorted people who've got nothing better to do with their days than stick their noses in another man's litter box.

The dead cat at the center of a whacked-out catricide trial now eating up precious court time and tax dollars in downtown Manhattan is no innocent wittle victim.

PHOTOS: Man On Trial For Cat Killing

Norman the Cat, who was pummeled to death last year at the age of 8 by an inarguably hot, allegedly drunk, former Met minor leaguer and bit-part actor named Joseph Petcka, had serious issues.

The first of which may have been his name.

Owner Lisa Altobelli testified yesterday that she named Norman after the zhlubby character Norm from "Cheers" - "my favorite show." Norman Bates sounds more accurate.

No one likes to see a little frisky drowning in a pool of his own blood. Well, not many.

Hecate encounters a skunk

| 5 Comments | 0 TrackBacks

Sigh. I was out registering folks to vote and Deb was over working on the newsletter. Apparently, the dogs were outside and Hecate had an encounter with a skunk. Deb looked online and said that the best stuff to bathe a skunked dog was apparently baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. So, I did that to her, although I substituted vinegar for the hydrogen peroxide, since I had the former, but not the latter. Sigh. So much for getting to bed somewhat early.

Well, it is officially Labor Day weekend for me. If I haven't done it in a while, I try to clean the refrigerator. I got that done and it wasn't too bad. I did screw up and forget that I had left 3 cans of frozen orange juice in the downstairs freezer after I had turned the power off. (I don't tend to use it for anything other than that.)

I also figured that the dogs could also use a bath. Heracles was unbelievably compliant. I think he just liked spending time being the focus of attention. Hecate was also pretty good and their fur is so soft and shiny now.

Visit to Mom's

My mom had me over yesterday for a slightly belated birthday dinner, which was very nice. My brother, Steve, and his girlfriend, Karen. were also, and I brought my 2 dogs, so we had my 2 dogs and Mom's 2 dogs. They were actually fairly calm.

After dinner, my mom showed us the batch of chicks that were about 4-6 weeks old. Cute! Some of the chickens were a breed that tends to have feathers on their feet, so it looked like they were wearing glitzy pants from a Las Vegas lounge act or something.

I also helped Mom reset her voice mail box on her cell phone.

All in all, it was a very nice day! (Apologies for the poor photo quality. I was using the camera phone for basically the first time.)

My friend Paula has been playing around with posting videos to YouTube. Here she is doing a sort of Wild Kingdom with some fierce kittens that live near her house.
