Here's a wacky idea: rather than coming up with ways to selectively apply a flawed policy, why not not just worth with Congress to get it repealed, as was promised during the campaign?? It's a bad law that costs the military valuable personnel at a time when we are strained. Coming up with a more "humane" way of enforcing the policy is like coming up with a more "humane" way of beating your dog. The problem is that there is no way to make something that is discriminatory and counter-productive "humane." Yeesh.

Defense chief giving 'don't ask, don't tell' a closer look

By Barbara Starr
CNN Pentagon Correspondent

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- For the first time, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is outlining potential Obama administration plans to enforce the "don't ask, don't tell" rule selectively so that some gays could serve in the military.

<img border="0" alt="U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says there may be flexibility in applying " don't ask, don't tell."" src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2009/POLITICS/07/01/gates.gays/art.gates.gi.jpg" width="292" height="219" />

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says there may be flexibility in applying "don't ask, don't tell."

Gates said he is looking at ways to make the policy "more humane," including letting people serve who may have been outed due to vengeance or a jilted lover. The remarks appeared in a transcript the Pentagon released Tuesday.

In addition, Capt. John Kirby, spokesman for Adm.
Very tired, but feeling very good here. The Pride Picnic yesterday went off very well. My mom was kind enough to agree to embroider shirts with her sewing machine, and gave me a call Friday afternoon and asked, “The picnic is next week, yes?” I panicked and said, “Oh no! It’s tomorrow!” I worried that I had dropped the ball. (The operative phrase for me for the week before the picnic is “neurotic blur.”) She then said, “Relax! I'm just jerking your chain.” and I resisted the urge to say (in my best Dorothy Zbornak growl) “Shady Pines, Ma!” I picked up the shirts late Friday.

The picnic itself went fairly well. I am SO deeply grateful for all of the wonderful people in the area. I had been worried that Pittsburgh having their Pride stuff that week, including something that evening, would be a conflict, but we actually had a few more people than last year. We had about 330 people or so, which is the most folks at a local pride ever! (Counting the 90’s and forward. There were some big events back in the 1970’s before the other large cities had their own events well established.)

The Stonewall Celebration at the UU this morning was fantastic and incredibly moving. There were several times during the service that I was close to tears. I was particularly close when Jeremy (who was one of the cooks yesterday and who did a HUGE amount of great work!) read a bit about honoring our Queer ancestors. It was sort of based on a Pagan charge that I have always loved. Jeremy’s other half, Eric, looked over from across the room and noticed that I was very close to losing it. Jeremy concluded with a “Blessed be!” and I responded in kind. I visited with folks at the coffee hour afterward.

I am taking tomorrow off to tie up loose ends. Tired but wow, am I ever lucky to have so many great people. Deeply grateful for all the reasons for joy in my life!

I guess that he found Erie Gay News online and contacted me. I explained that I wasn’t Christian, but I had several friends who were and I definitely knew Christians who are straight and gay supportive.

I feel like it went okay. I passed along info about other Christian folks in the area that he could also contact.

In May, when the California Supreme Court ruled that the voters’ ban on homosexual marriages should stand, that decision reverberated around the nation, sending a major blow to same-sex couples pursuing legal marriage.

These two street signs in Nashville reveal the irony of the relationship between gays and the Christian Church. – TRIBUNE FILE PHOTO

Many in the conservative Christian community rejoiced and applauded the court’s ruling. The issue of same-sex marriages has polarized and created contentious reactions from both Christians and gays, which begs the question: Can homosexuals and the Christian community coexist?

“We (Christians) are obligated to love people, but it’s OK that we can disagree. In America, there’s a misperception that we are homophobic. We have a responsibility and right to share a Biblical viewpoint on the issue. Our first allegiance is to the Lord Jesus Christ,” said the Rev. Kimberlee Johnson, director of the Center for Urban Youth Development at Eastern University in St. Davids.

Mike Mahler, the co-editor of the Erie Gay News, offered, "Of course gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) people and the Christian community can coexist. I know gay people who are quite active with their churches and I also know straight people within the Christian community who passionately believe that justice and equality for all of God's children is very much a part of Jesus' message."

… read the rest of the article here.

Gay-religious harmony exists despite tensions

Technorati Tags: Gay,Christianity

I obviously disagree with former VP Dick Cheney on a great number of issues, but kudos to him for standing up for marriage equality. However, I must admit to stifling a giggle when I read the wording about “People out to get a shot at that.” Mostly due to recalling Cheney having the accident where he shot the guy in the face.

But the big idea is that he spoke up for equality, and that is great and praise-worthy!

It's not surprising when Vice President Dick Cheney disagrees with President Obama. But it is surprising when he takes a more progressive position than the president.
Said Cheney: "I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay, and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that... historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis... But I don't have any problem with that.
Okay, I guess it is now confirmed that I am a mechanical ignoramus. I had recently had some weirdness with my car when I would hit about 70 MPH or greater. The car was scheduled to go in to be checked out on Wednesday. Recently, I was giving someone a ride and he asked me why I had the car in the gear that I did. I always assumed that D in regular type was Drive (which is correct) and the normal gear when driving. Apparently, D in reverse type is Overdrive and the default. (Okay, I personally think that this is not intuitively obvious.) So, I drove the car down to Edinboro and back using the correct gear and the problem did not occur. Furthermore, it sounds like I didn’t do any damage to the car, I have just been getting slightly less fuel economy. Now I just have to retrain myself. Crisis averted, and I feel like a fool for not having caught this.

I was out at the Zone on Friday and catching up with some friends. I was chatting with the ever-delightful Season (“Come for the cleavage, stay for the sarcasm” as she recently quipped) and she mentioned that someone said that because she is letting her hair go back to its natural blonde, that she looks like a blonde in front and a brunette from behind. Her husband, Chris, remarked, “It’s like a threesome – without having to buy two dinners!”

It was disappointing, but not unexpected about the California Supreme Court upholding Proposition 8. Thankfully, they didn’t invalidate the existing 18,000 marriages.

I got a call from WJET TV 24, who wanted to do a story. I had guessed that it was likely that local news would want some reaction. I thought that they did a fairly good story, which you can read here (and which includes video.)

They asked about other people to speak to, and I went through the lists. The camera guy mentioned about his former neighbor, and I asked who it was. He said it was Janice Hanusik, and I mentally slapped myself for not having thought of Janice before. I gave her a call, and she was up for it. Yay! I am glad that they led in the story with her. I think that she made some great points, and it is really important for people to hear from people who are in relationships and denied equality. I obviously disagree with the minister that they had speaking, but he was at least respectful.

I am mentally kicking myself for not having brought up the point that clergy/churches would not be required to perform marriage ceremonies. This is EXACTLY what the case is today. If a nice Catholic guy wanted to marry a nice Jewish girl at a Methodist church, the church is perfectly free to refuse, but they are not allowed to prevent the couple from having a civil ceremony. Many people confuse civil marriage with a religious ceremony. It’s not. Heterosexual couples that are Atheist, Agnostic or not tied to a particular religious tradition can get married today. Equal marriage rights for same sex couple would be the same thing.

Oddly enough, when I was driving back to work, I went by just as Janice was letting out the reporter and camera guy after the interview.

Technorati Tags: Same sex marriage, marriage equality,California Supreme Court

I was going to go down to Vertigo in Butler this past Friday. They have just moved into a new location. I got on I-79 and was heading south. Then the car started making an intermittent jerky motion, which got me distinctly nervous. At the Saegertown exit, I decided to turn back. Drat! I think it got better on the way back and I don’t think that I observed it to happen more than once. I went out to the 2 bars and no car problems.

Saturday was scheduled to be a trip to a housewarming for a couple I know in Buffalo. I decided to try going and figured I could turn back if it was a problem. I discovered that the problem with the car only seems to happen when I go above 70 MPH, so I just used the cruise control (which was a first) and things seemed okay.

I used the GPS receiver to find the place, and that made me much less apprehensive about finding the place. However, when I got there, I discovered that I had entered the wrong address! Dummy me had picked the wrong street when spelling it out. Fortunately, it wasn’t that far away, so I got there without too much problem.

The party was fun, and there was a nice mix of folks I know and folks that I hadn’t met before. I hadn’t meant to stay too late, but it went okay.

I got twisted around slightly when I meant to get off at the rest stop near Eden/Angola and got off at the regular exit. I figured I would make a U turn and get back on I-90, but then discovered that I had instead turned back and was headed in the opposite direction. (So, as pertains to the GPS – artificial intelligence doesn’t work without some of the real variety.)

Sunday was a trip down to the Pittsburgh Pride Picnic and my friend James came along. I discovered that the GPS receiver hadn’t charged from the night before, but I also figured that I didn’t really need it until we got to Pittsburgh, so we were able to save on batter power. (The charger that goes in the car isn’t terribly reliable. Groan.) We took my car and just kept the speed to 65, and things seemed okay.

The event itself was very nice! James took some photos, we danced and chatted a bit. There were a fair number of Erie area folks there.

So, tomorrow is back to work and call to make an appointment to have the car looked at. Sigh!

From when I was 13 to when I was about 20, I was a news carrier for the Erie Times News, and for the first several years, Rosalie was the person that I would go to on Saturdays to settle up after having collected on my paper route. She was terrifically kind and a very thoughtful person. She had 4 kids. Her daughter Jewel baby sat us when my parents were both working over the summer, and her other daughter Lydia was friends with my sister.

A few years back, I had been in the news for GLBT stuff, and I got a call from her. It was wonderful catching up and she was so kind and supportive.

My condolences to her family. She was a truly good human being.

I must admit that reading this headline got a giggle. ("Okay, not THAT Madonna and not THAT Jesus, even though the respective ages aren't far off.") And Jesus converted from Catholicism to something vaguely Jewish. Hmm, didn't it go rather the other direction with the more well known Jesus? I must admit that the jokes pretty much seem to write themselves here. Are they registered at Tiffany's for the gold? Did some wags bring that, plus maybe frankincense and myrrh as a wedding/commitment ceremony gift? I imagine that asking if the groom had any piercings would lead to a VERY awkward silence. ("If the groom will now give me the ring... oh, it fell through your hand. Bad luck, that.") Would this also mean that the wedding night was also simultaneously one-on-one and also a foursome?

Can we just agree that if you are known as Madonna and you are involved with someone named Jesus that at least one of you needs a name change before going through with a public ceremony?

Madonna and lover Jesus to swap vows in Kabbalah service

EXCLUSIVE by Kate Mansey 10/05/2009

Madonna and her toyboy lover Jesus are planning a “commitment ceremony” in New York.

The queen of pop and Brazilian model Jesus Luz will take part in a service in front of a rabbi at the Kabbalah Centre in Manhattan.

Friends said Madonna, 50, and the 22-year-old model decided they wanted to take a new step in their relationship after her bid to adopt a Malawi orphan failed.

Jesus has already converted from Catholicism to the Kabbalah religion as a mark of his commitment to the singer.

We left the dogs in the yard while we were over there, as Grandma is most decidedly NOT a pet person, and the dogs are rather rambunctious.

After that, we came back and made dinner. Mom also had some problems launching Google Earth, which my brother Steve had installed for her. I got it working and we played with it for a bit. I was able to zoom in and see the front of my house, which was kind of fun and freaky.

It was a really quiet and nice day. I am so lucky to have such a great mom!
