Lobbying visit with Congressmember

My friend Dave came up with the idea of collecting signatures on a congratulations card and lobbying newly elected US Congressmember Kathy Dahlkemper about GLBT issues. We had been gathering signatures for a while, and we were able to set up an appointment for this afternoon at her Erie office. 7 of us went to talk about legislation for hate crimes, ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, marriage equality/domestic partner benefits and the Employee Non Discrimination Act. Overall, I think that things went quite well. None of the bills are currently introduced in this session, but we thought that starting a dialogue now was a good idea.

As it so happened, her office was having their official grand opening later that afternoon, so some of us came back. I had a nice time chatting with folks. I noticed that the big congratulations card that the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Erie circulated was prominently displayed. Things felt like they had gone quite well.
