Hecate encounters a skunk

Sigh. I was out registering folks to vote and Deb was over working on the newsletter. Apparently, the dogs were outside and Hecate had an encounter with a skunk. Deb looked online and said that the best stuff to bathe a skunked dog was apparently baking soda and hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. So, I did that to her, although I substituted vinegar for the hydrogen peroxide, since I had the former, but not the latter. Sigh. So much for getting to bed somewhat early.

    Yikes. My dog, Cricket, getting sprayed has
    been one of our biggest concerns of late as well. Was the bath you administered successful with the vinegar substitution? I hope so. I have had other pets sprayed after meeting up with a Pepe Le Peu and it is NOT AT ALL PLEASANT! My condolences.
    Skunks are plentiful this year and now is the season they are scoping out possible denning areas for the winter so they are wandering far and wide!

    Just curious. If you used hydrogen peroxide, couln’t that make your pet’s hair look fake blonde?

    Hmm, she’s a black lab, so I am guessing it would have taken a LOT of hydrogen peroxide, but I ended up substituting vinegar. (So now I am visualizing the episode of the Brady Bunch with the volcano for science class that was powered by vinegar and baking soda.)
    And how gay is that for taking the crisis of a dog’s encounter with a skunk to give her highlights! ;) (“Let’s get you cleaned up, and maybe work in a fabulous makeover while we are doing that! Snap!)

    @bojosmom – The bath seems to have been fairly successful. I have a rather poor sense of smell, so I am not the best judge. However, she seems to be much improved. And it is kind of cool in a 13 year old kid way watching your pet’s fur fizz. ;)
    I have, up until this point, been fairly successful in keeping these 2 dogs from skunk encounters. My late dog, Morgaine Imelda, had 1 or 2 when there were skunks living under the shed in the (at that point) vacant house next door. I really hope that they aren’t denning there.

    I’m always afraid that Milo will get sprayed too – we had a skunk issue around the house towards the end of last school year (at the time they had moved in under our porch).
    I’m hoping that your skunk problem has been solved – otherwise, just keep bathing her (but not too much or her skin will dry out) with a mild shampoo – a baby shampoo works wonders – until the smell is gone.
