The owner/founder of the company where I work died last Wednesday. He was a good man. I went to the viewing on Sunday. He had rather a rather large family, many of whom work or have worked at the family business.
I noted when I walked past the casket that there was a ping pong gun in there. It later came out that it was a family routine to distribute those around the holidays. I tried desperately to force myself NOT to think of the scene with the ping pong balls in the film, "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert."
Most of us from work were at the funeral. It was good that so many people remembered him with affection. The family is Catholic, so I tried to figure out what was the best way to handle not being of that particular tradition. When I was at the same church a while ago for the father of one of the folks in my coven, I found myself noticing some people being silent, since many of the people who attended were also Pagan. (I think most of the pallbearers were.) Oddly enough, the co-worker that I was next to was also quiet, although he is Christian (a preacher, but from a different denomination.) I believe that everyone was respectful and considerate. (Making a scene at a funeral is definitely not cool!)
I am glad that the family is so closely knit and that they can support each other through a difficult time.
