One more question. Is the carpeting on the stairs blue?
Michael, where are these "gutters" for I see inmany older American homes? I can't imagine that they are for water, because there is carpet and because in older homes the florrs are mostly made from wood. Or are they for heating the houses?
Plese excuse my stupid question, but I wonder about them for a while.

Hey there,
Yes, Paula, the carpeting on the stairs is indeed blue.
Georgia, a gutter is actually on the outside of a house. Just underneath the eaves on the roof is a channel for carrying away rain water. The gutter is horizontal and parallel to the ground. So, the rain falls on the roof, runs down into the gutter, which then goes into the rainspout, so that rain doesn't pour off the roof in sheets.
Not sure if I explained that well. I am LOUSY with home maintenance stuff and it is probably the thing that makes me feel the most incompetent.
Thanks, Michael, for the explanation. Yes, gutters are normally outside the house... Well, perhaps I used the wrong word. On your picture: What for is the black square inthe floor in front of the closed white door? I called it gutter, because I didn't know the right word for it.
I'm asking, because I'm very interested in houses, especially older houses, and house-technique...
Greetings from Germany

I believe that is called a cold air vent, or that is what Paula described it. (I think.)
I believe that it basically transmits air from the furnace.
Again, I am lousy with home maintenance stuff, and the whole subject tends to terrify me. So, none of this is even remotely authoritative.
Never mind, Michael, but this answers my question. Thanks a lot!

Well, aren't we all lousy with some thing? I'm lousy with tax declarations and similar stuff, because I hate it. But I love DIY and renovating houses.
