I had a very nice belated birthday dinner tonight at my Mom's. We had tacos. Years ago, when I was in high school, my mom visited my grandparents and uncle in California for Easter. Dad took care of us kids, and we all collectively decided to screw tradition and have tacos for Easter. I recall that Mom didn't approve, but she has gotten quite mellow. So, when Mom asked my brother Steve what we should have for dinner, he said tacos. I guess it is effectively familial shorthand for culinary nonconformity, or just whimsy.
When I got there, Mom was out shopping, so I did the dishes. When she got back, we chatted while making dinner. It was a nice way to connect. My brother helped as well.
I brought my 2 dogs, who played very happily with Mom's 2 dogs, Mom also has 3 button quails, as well as the 2 dogs.
I think that she is really jonesing for the alpacas. They are cute, furry, wonderfully weird, and their fur can be sheared for knitting. I could be wrong, but I am thinking that my stepfather doesn't stand a chance. She even had some photos of when she visited them. She mentioned that they lived about 25 years, so I might eventually become responsible for them. I must admit that the possibility of eventually taking care of an aging parent's ungulates never really was one I had considered.
All in all, it was a really pleasant evening. I am glad that I was born into the family that I was.
