My friend Rowan is moving to State College, and the belly dancing/tribal dance troupe that she belongs to had a farewell party this past Saturday at Trance. The various women did some great stuff! I really liked the variety of what they did, and their wonderful sense of humor.
There were quite a few Pagans there, so there was the usual joke about Trance becoming a witch bar. We wondered about having color coded pentacles, similar to the hanky code that some fetishists use. We also wondered that carrying your wand or Book of Shadows in your left back pocket meant "Gives hex", and in your right means "Gets hexed." (Although I suppose that being Pagan means that one should ultimately be versatile.) Jeremy wondered if some big old Witch queen who was Gardnerian would have a braided belt with many colors, meaning that they were into EVERYTHING. I pointed out that, borrowing from the hanky code, that orange already was designated as being "anything and everything."
At one point, her friends have Rowan a broom for "traveling back to visit her friends." At one point, she was dancing with the broom balanced on her head.
After the performance, folks just were dancing on the dance floor. Slowly, the dance floor was just Temple of Bast/Middle Eastern dancers, and they were all moving together. I figured that if you had a large group of women doing synchronized tribal dance that they should be called the "Iraq-ettes."
When a song came on by "Earth, Wind & Fire", they walked off the dance floor. I figured it was because the 4th element (Water) was left out.
So basically, it was another evening of St. Patrick's Day - Gay bar - belly dancing silliness. How overdone is that? ;)
