Why this should come as a surprise to anyone escapes me, but here goes...
I occasionally read some right wing sites (like I need more aggravation in my life??) I saw 2 articles, both at AgapePress.org, which is the "journalistic" arm of the American Family Association. (Hey, they can use quotation marks around gay "marriage", then I can use them for the tripe that they spew.)
In this article, they slam the Golden Globes for giving awards to gay-themed movies, like Capote, TransAmerica and (gasp!) Brokeback Mountain:
(AgapePress) - Pro-family advocate Bob Knight says last week's Golden Globe awards have left little doubt about Hollywood's efforts to promote the homosexual lifestyle. Big winners at this year's Golden Globes definitely focused on the edgy side of sexuality. The pro-homosexual cowboy film Brokeback Mountain took honors for best drama, best director, best song and best screenplay, while Desperate Housewives' Felicity Huffman won best actress for her role in TransAmerica as a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual. In addition, Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor for his portrayal of homosexual writer Truman Capote in Capote. (Bob) Knight's assessment? "Hollywood really outdid itself this time," says the director of the Culture and Family Institute. "[T]hree homosexual-themes movies scored some of the top awards Hollywood has to give out." None of the three films has done well at the box office, proving perhaps that Dr. Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America was correct when she observed that "the media elites are proving that their pet projects are more important than profit."
In this article, they recap the top grossing movies for this weekend:
...In its debut weekend in theaters, the missionary drama End of the Spear has made it into the box office top ten. According to studio estimates, the weekend's biggest grossing film was Underworld: Evolution, followed by Hoodwinked, Glory Road and Last Holiday. End of the Spear tied for ninth with a much bigger-budget film, The New World. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which opened in the U.S. on December 9, was the weekend's seventh most popular film. [AP]<
Okay, notice that in the first article, they scream that the awards were given to movies that they claim are not getting good box office. Then in the next paragraph, they mention the top four grossing films of this past weekend, then the 7th and 9th. Interesting number choice, yes? Not all top ten, just top 4 then 7 and 9.
You see this coming, right? Guess what was #5 this past weekend? Drum roll, please! Brokeback Mountain! So if the #5 entry doesn't count as good box office, and therefore is undeserving of praise (if you can follow that logic), I guess that logically Narnia and End of the Spear should be regarded the same way. Although some of the right wing are pissed that openly gay Chad Allen is in End of the Spear, and the real life family that the story is based on supports that. But, when one is talking about truth, I guess facts must just be inconvenient and in the way.
I follow pop culture pretty closely, even though I can't get out to movies anymore. What the hell is "End of the Spear?" Never heard of it. Seriously.
End of the Spear is based on the true story of 5 Christian missionaries who were murdered about 50 years ago by the Waodoni (spelling?) one of the most violent groups known to anthropology. Chad Allen plays both the father and the son as an adult. The son returned and helped the tribe be less violent. It sounds like a good story.
Oh yeah, the family's last name is Saint, and there is a connection to a family member here in Erie. The family is fine with openly gay Chad being in the movie.
Should we expect anything less from the American Fraud Association's spin machine? Gawd, I have to wash my hands every time I go to their website!
